She´s always so pretentious and mechanical, every movement, every sigh, every single gesture seems planned and unnatural. Hmm... Didn't Katharine Hepburn say basically the same thing? 🤔 And so did Truman Capote and people who have realized she´s not that amazing. And I say it, she´s good (I like her in Adaptation, The Hours, Angels in America and some other movies in which she is natural and raw), but certainly not an acting goddess. Look at Isabelle Huppert, Emma Thompson, Glenn Close, Sigourney Weaver, Toni Collette, Julie Christie, Juliette Binoche and of course our Michelle. They are amazingly versatile, but they do not get the recognition they deserve.

Just watched Nomadland yesterday. The film is good and so is Frances McDormand, but seriously "Best picture" and "Best actress"? I love McDormand but her performance in the film is in my opinion far from her previous winning performances in Fargo and Three Billboards. I haven't seen the other films or other actresses that were nominated this year, so maybe the competition was "weak" . Still I really can't believe she won an Oscar for this.

I am surprised at this reaction I wanted Carey to win but I think Frances was the best of 5 great performances. I just don't think Frances is worthy of 3 Oscars. Maybe Best Picture wasn't a strong category this year but I thought Actress was very strong. All 5 were worthy of winning (Andra in last position for me but still would have been worthy).

No unfortunately I haven't seen French Exit and cant wait to see it!
I'm not saying that Nomadland and Frances aren't good - hope it didn't come out that way - they certainly are and I'm still thinking a lot about the film and its message, but I always have such high hopes when I see films that have been awarded as best film at the Oscars. Same goes for actors and actresses who win for best performance. But as I say I haven't seen the other films, so maybe Nomadland stood out (for those who saw them all).

I also watched Nomadland on Friday. I thought it was good but I would never have it down as a Best Picture film. I wouldn't rush to watch it again.

I watched Nomadland last night.
It was slow and episodic but beautiful in the way it honored those who take to the road when the American dream fails them. There is something fundamentally wrong when society discards older, taxpaying citizens who worked for decades and are forced to live hand to mouth in their later years. In some ways, the film romanticized nomadic life but it also gave me glimpses into what that life might be like. The kind of restlessness and apartness that McDormand's character embodies is confounding to me, but the use of real life characters vs. professional actors was effective. I believed their stories. Unlike most of them, McDormand's character had other options but chose not to exercise them. That was probably the most difficult part of the film for me to understand but I guess it was her nature, something she could not alter no matter how many lifelines were extended to her.
Not McDormand's best performance, but she held my attention throughout.

"Not McDormand's best performance, but she held my attention throughout." I totally agree with you Michael, she's good in the film, but not one of her best performances, at least in my opinion.

It's kind of sad that this is the first acting award she has won in quite along time. So underrated.

I'm really so pissed off by Sony Classic and how they handled French Exit, they didn't even make a post about her winning of the Canadian Screen Awards.

Michelle deserves credit for promoting the hell out of it in spite of SCP's negligence. I think she particularly wanted to support Jacobs, DeWittt and her supporting cast in addition to being satisfied with her performance. I hope everyone on this board gets to see it soon.

Finally found video of the 2021 Canadian Screen awards, but sadly she did not record an acceptance, I think her voiceover is just from a press interview she did, but nice to have the official video of her winning:
