Well, no Oscar nomination, as expected.
I knew the film would be too idiosyncratic/esoteric for the Academy, regardless of how strong Michelle's performance was. I think SPC suspected this, and pushed for the easier to grasp The Father.
Outside of a half-hearted Golden Globe nom, French Exit just wasn't it for Michelle despite all the buzz.

Not surprising. I'm probably putting too positive a spin on this, but Frances Price will go down as one of her most memorable performances and she was the lead too, easily carrying the film.

The Oscars are boring and so predictable, voters mostly just name check and go with what the precursors did.

The Oscars are boring and so predictable, voters mostly just name check and go with what the precursors did. It's like the acting branch looked at the Goldderby odds chart and copied the top 5 in all the categories. The only surprise was Lakeith Stanfield. The supporting actress category was so disappointing, which was supposedly the most exciting category because of the many possible surprise nominees. I was hoping for Foster and Burstyn (who's quite frankly the best thing in Pieces of a Woman) to make Oscar comebacks, but they went with the most obvious five nominees.

I've said it before - it was the film that did her in.
Maybe Emmy will be kinder.

Another year I won't see Oscars, so boring and predictable.
It is clear that they want to be politically correct but not fix the underlying problem.
Betty Ford will give, too, joys to Michelle.

I loved Malek as Freddie Mercury and I loved the film too. Wasn't expecting to love either one of them before going in either. Driving Miss Daisy? Once was more than enough for me. Never liked it or the hammy acting of Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman both of whom gave far superior performances elsewhere. This was one of those career achievement awards for Tandy and Pfeiffer should have won that year. Her Susie Diamond is right up there with Bacall, Hayworth and Monroe at their peak as classic screen goddesses.

Frances has officially reached the Meryl level of overrated for me. Also what a dumb telecast. Build it around Chadwick, save his category for last, then give it to the old white man. Anthony was fantastic and is a deserved winner, but geez. Stupid Oscars.

Surprised Frances won so soon after Three Billboards. I don't care for seeing her win anymore now. I think that is enough.

McDormand is brilliant but I was team Carey this year. Cannot believe they went with Hopkins over Boseman. You would think with all of the hype over making the membership more diverse, the voting would reflect that. But no....
Poor Glenn.....always the bridesmaid.

Meryl Streep must be really pissed as Frances has 3 Best Actress Oscars 🤣 I honestly didn’t mind her winning. Her performance was good. On the other hand, I’m glad Carey didn’t win. She’s been begging for an Oscar for eleven years now and she’s gotta keep trying. I do hate actors who act for award attention and I think she falls in that category. I wish it had been Kirby though.

They should make Frances give back her Oscar for 3 Billboards if she wants to keep this new one. She had no business winning for that shit movie.
I honestly think Michelle will never be nominated again, she's just not loved enough by them for whatever reason. Unlessss it's a super baity role or maybe a deglam role in a Best Picture contender. She needs a stronger film around her. Just depressing. Other people get nominated and win for shitty movies and performances, but she just never gets that lucky.

I really liked her performance and the movie. How sad! Actually, I think she deserved it for French Exit. This would´ve been her year had SPC campaign it better. She needs a great role in a Scorsese, Fincher, Anderson (Paul Thomas or Wes) or a David O´Russell film. Is it too much to ask?

I gotta say I liked McDormand’s performance in Three Billboards and I liked film too.
FE was too light, too odd, and too divisive to boost her performance into top five spots. And I agree that SCP did the film and her no favors by bungling the release.
I do think her movie star looks work against her among some actors who take themselves and their craft so seriously.

I have been saying this for a long time, michelle must understand that if she does not take part in a great project with a great director she will hardly win again ... and with all due respect a great director is not azazel jacobs or gideon raff or joachim Ronning or David Hollander and the list goes on .... as you say the great directors are others and that is scorsese coppola fincher anderson almodovar ....

Jeez, it's like it was a blessing in disguise Michelle didn't get Oscar attention this year. Apparently, the less depressing your movie is, the less likely it is to be rewarded. Another year, another drop in credibility for these awards...

Anthony was fantastic and is a deserved winner, but geez. Stupid Oscars. Frances McDormand is one of the most overrated actresses ever. Very limited range as an actress, she's practically playing a variation of the same type of character in her movies (i.e, mannish, tough, void of vanity, sharp-tongued). Meryl Streep at least is a true versatile actress who may be a little over-rewarded, but a much much better actress, who is deserving to have three Oscars. Frances McDormand does not deserve three Oscars. Anthony Hopkins winning, on the other hand, was an inspired upset. But Chadwick Boseman was fantastic too, it's just that "The Father" is a better movie than "Ma Rainey's".

It wouldn't have made any difference in the outcome but SCP placed all their Oscar bets on The Father. FE never stood a chance and the film itself was a hard sell at best.
SCP's release of The Father facilitated the Anthony Hopkins win at the expense of Boseman. What a shame.

He’s not wrong. Meryl is far more versatile than Frances. And look, I like Frances a lot. Her win for Fargo was deserved. I’d have given her the win for Almost Famous in supporting too. But she’’s not a god of acting, in my opinion .

But she’’s not a god of acting, in my opinion . And neither is Meryl IMO. She´s always so pretentious and mechanical, every movement, every sigh, every single gesture seems planned and unnatural. It´s tiring to see her and to see her being overawarded and overacknowledged (if those words exist) And you really think an Oscar for The Iron Lady was deserved? Agree to disagree. I´m a Pfan and have been for more than 20 years because I see a naturalism in Michelle´s craft that I have never seen. She makes me feel something, she conveys emotion so easily. She can be dramatic, funny, relatable, bitchy, strong, vulnerable. She IS a versatile actress, but underrated as hell.

Oh no, her win for Iron Lady is embarrassing and one of the worst wins ever. She hasn’t deserved quite a few of her nominations. But she is more versatile than Frances.

I hope we get a BLU RAY release soon.
I remember when I went to see Michelle in Batman Returns, a friend whispered to me that no one in films could do what she was doing. Delivering on the character’s duality and brokenness and at the same making that extraordinary transformation into a fearless, take no prisoners action figure. She gave you meekness, bitterness, and anger and then upped it with high end glamour and kick assness. Neither Streep nor McDormand for all their acting awards could have touched Michelle in that role.
She’s my queen, y’all. 😺

I know a lot of other people feel the same way, too. I love her in things like Adaptation, where she's actually raw and real.
