I'm glad she did this even if she doesn't end up with a nomination. It's the kind of fresh part I hoped she would do in a project that's a little outside her wheelhouse in terms of genre and tone. I think the only way the film can justifiably be called a disappointment is if it isn't good.
I feel it's true what they say about the fact that it's the films that live on more than anything else. Ultimately, every time I watch The Age of Innocence, I think about how fantastic she is in it and how it's one of Scorsese's best. I don't sit there muttering to myself: "Screw you, Debra Winger for taking her slot at the Oscars that year!" Lol
And yea, it wasn't Michelle's screen time in mother! that failed to get her nominated. It was all the voters either not liking the film, or not wanting to admit that they did lol

Even if she gets rave reviews, but ends up not getting nominated, I would be very disappointed. She doesn't get that many lead roles anymore, so I don't know when she's going to get another shot like this one. Yeah, I agree the film itself is a reason why Michelle did not get nominated for "mother". But I also believe her screentime contributed to it. I have read a lot of comments from predictors after seeing her that her role was too small (even though she's great in it and pretty much the best thing about the movie). And I agree with them. The role is not juicy enough, it lacked that one big scene. Her monologue about motherhood felt very incomplete, it lacked another 45 seconds or so to fully have an impact. That's just my take.

That's cool. For me, given my obsessive particularly obsessive nature, if I start to get too worked up about awards, I'm not going to enjoy or appreciate the film as an experience or its proper place in the continuation and progression of her body of work, which is ultimately I think what matters most...to all of us. I also find myself needing to step back from this issue on occasion since I already care about it far more than she does...and that's not the healthiest. But like I said, I dunno how to quit when I get ahold of something I can obsess over. Ah, gotta love self-awareness before lunchtime haha
I just really want this to be the kind of film that's a blend of the darkly comic, the poignant and the slightly surreal. I don't want it to be dumbed down, or made "accessible" for Margie in the midwest. I want it to be more special than that because as an artist I feel she is capable of more than the standard or the conventional and I'm excited and hopeful that this will live up to that. OMG two weeks (and a day) until we find out!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, me too. I want at least one more nomination for her. She's had a long, overlooked career. She's over due for another one.

I think the biggest thing for me from the Bruni piece is he says French Exit is an awards hopeful, meaning Sony Classics thinks it's very good and possibly not even just a play for Best Actress. This could also get an Adapted Screenplay nomination and Lucas Hedges could coattail to his second nomination as well.

I dunno...the more I think about it...I think I’m starting to care less and less about the awards hunt for Michelle. It’s becoming increasingly the least fun part of pfandom and about being a pfan. I mean, sure she deserves accolades, no question (she has always deserved more than she’s gotten), and it’s fun hearing her name called out and the performance being recognized in that way, and all of that.
I dunno, maybe I’m just going on a rant here, but I don’t really get any enjoyment out of looking at her ranking on awards sites or getting nervous when another actress gets some strong buzz. And I know it’s all in the name of caring and devotion and wanting her to be recognized in that way. But I dunno, I’m not finding any pleasure or joy in it, only worry, doubt and disappointment...and there’s nothing I can do with that. I don’t have any use for feeling anxious about something that’s meant to only be a source of joy.
Michelle has a movie coming out and honestly, that’s so much more valuable to me than whether or not it leads to awards. It’s her work and to categorize it by whether or not it bears Oscar fruit, well I dunno I guess I feel I’d be an ungrateful pfan and be telling myself that it’s only cuz I want her to have something she deserves...but probably couldn’t give two turds about. Lol
I want her to have her Oscar and, just like I did with mother! and Where is Kyra?, I’m gonna use my voting rights over at Austin Film Critics Assoc. to make sure I do my small part in trying to make it happen. But I think I’m gonna leave the rest of awards season watching to you fine folks. You’re all way more on top of it than I am anyways, breathtakingly so lol I think I’m just gonna sit back and enjoy the movie. 😊😊
And I mean that, I’m gonna order some champagne on the 10th to watch with French Exit...and, okay, most likely a pizza too lol
DEFINITELY a pizza, screw it!! 🤪🤘

Also, French Exit is sold out at NYFF even after they added the extra tickets, which is pretty cool I think

It's overkill. It reduces it to a sport and takes away from the joy of these wonderful performances. I think some of them are drunk with power or the illusion of power because I don't know if they really have as much influence as they think. That being said, I'm the first to admit I want Michelle's work to be recognized and I will be ecstatic if she lands an Oscar nomination. She has been criminally overlooked in the past and she represents a kind of movie star glamour combined with acting talent that is becoming increasingly rare. I hope the Academy comes through for her.

People are obsessed with award and prizes. Everything is turning into competetions and award season is beginning earlier and earlier. Releases of movies are part of a strategic plan to get the most chance of winning a prize. To me this is all ridiculous, I just want to see a movie and enjoy it, nothing more nothing less. I'm a blu ray collector and trying to collect all her movies so I can watch these when I want to. That's what I enjoy!

Why should we bothering with something we can't control. I will just wait until I'm able to watch the movie and enjoy some Pfeiffer moments on the big screen again, and only will get nervous when her name actually in the nomination list.

Thanks guys! I was beginning to think I was the only one who felt that way. It’s so so so much worrying and stressing and maybe it’s cuz I’ve got a day job that’s pretty stressful and my freelance critic work has me contributing to three diff sites right now that I’m already kinda spread thin and overwhelmed, so it’s nice to have Michelle as a source of nothing but joy and positivity.
Awards season kinda takes away from that, for me anyways.
And John, I know! I’ve seen pics of your collection and it continues to be so incredibly impressive!! Well done, friend

Maybe there can be another thread for Awards Talk so that people who don't want to think about it can avoid it? I love talking about the Oscars too. I love reading about articles, listening to podcasts, and predictions etc. I'm excited that Michelle's finally in the middle of it. I don't mean to stress out anybody by talking about the Oscars and the predictions of pundits. I thought it would be exciting for all of us since she's been out of it for so long, particularly in the modern era of the Oscars.

What about an awards thread?? I think that could be a useful thing cuz there are ppl here who do like keeping track of the whole awards gauntlet whenever it looks like Michelle could be up for something. It could be a place where the latest postings of campaign notices, critics awards announcements, nominations, etc could be charted and this thread we’re in now can be a place for trailer announcements, links to interviews, stills, clips and reviews. I think it makes it cleaner that way, if anything, from a practical standpoint. Less clutter in one sprawling thread.

Wow, so the fest interview is a pre-filmed thing?? Interesting. Or is this a festival junket? Wonder when we get to see this!! Incidentally, I love all this Michelle at home footage we’ve been getting during the pandemic. Workouts aside, she looks so naturally chic...tho I’m sure she put on some makeup and did her hair for this, but still lol

Sorry but it's silly in my opinion to be so triggered by awards talk that you need a separate thread or board. But whatever, if you feel it's necessary, then do it. I'm out.

I do really think it's a good idea, beyond just French Exit. It can be a thread for future awards discussion of different kinds. Tribute awards, hopeful nominations for whatever she's in that year, potential nominations for upcoming roles, general Oscar season tracking, etc.
And yea, I think I'm thinking of someone else too ha ha I'm still waiting for some north american blu ray releases of hers to see the light of day. I can't believe the 20th anniversary of What Lies Beneath came and went without a release.
