All the oddsmakers and predictors have cheapened awards season. It's become a joke, really. People making a living off predicting the nominees before they see the performances. It's the Kentucky Derby without mint juleps and fascinators. I hate it. Yeah they certainly have too much influence.

Doesn't look like this will play at AFI either, but to be fair it doesn't look like they will have any big films this year except The Father. Hopefully Sundance.

Well the full festival lineup is supposed to be announced next month, according to their site. So we'll see Ohh I thought that was their full lineup. This isn't on the Mill Valley Festival lineup either(a popular California festival), but all the big films from other festivals are, Nomadland, One Night in Miami, Ammonite, and a few Sony Classics' other films like The Father and Truffle Hunters as well.

Netflix have too many in the race though. Davis, Kirby, Adams and Loren. They aren't all going to get in.

Bill Murray and Rashida Jones are at the NYFF premiere of On the Rocks tonight, gives me a little hope that maybe Pfeiffer will attend in person. Maybe they live in NY though?

I saw this and thought the author might have seen the film, but nope just going by what the press release said it seems, or maybe she heard from others about her performance? Still, good buzz: www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/new-york-film-festival-5-things-not-to-miss-at-the-reimagined-virtual-eventOn another note, lots of big films just got their release dates pushed back, West Side Story late 2021, Eternals to late 2021 (it had the same date as French Exit before). I wonder if this film will still come out in Feb. It's obviously much smaller, but things are just looking bad for movie theaters still.

Yea, there's been a good handful of release date changes today, haven't there?
I've been wondering the same about the movie coming out in Feb too. I mean I'm confident that it'll still be released this awards cycle, but nothing is guaranteed, least of all the date. If the studio changed their minds and this came out earlier for a limited run, it wouldn't surprise me.

Somebody on awardsworthy posted there was a 20 minute preview and people really liked it, but I see nothing about that anywhere else, so maybe they are lying or confused.

Okay here is the video of the guy who talked about the film and people's reactions to the preview, it's in Portuguese though, but on youtube you can click on subtitles/closed caption and select settings and choose auto translate to english or another language, it's not perfect but will have to do. This guy is a film critic and member of the Online Film Critics and Independent Spirit Awards. He says people who watched the preview liked what they saw and Michelle could be a big surprise in the awards race. youtu.be/Dw4u05--_00

I think SPC must be pretty darn confident if they are showing it to press already. If it was bad, they would hide it.

I agree. I like the idea of stealthily building it up this way by these scattered press screenings.

Yay! That's a great mini write-up about her performance. At least we know now that this really could take off, and that it isn't an empty buzz.

I'm still really nervous though and don't want our hopes to get dashed once again. The early buzz does sound good though especially for Michelle's performance.

Could this actually be happening?!?! Lol Yeah, I know!! Although she got pretty good buzz in "Mother" too. Many people thought it's going to be the movie that will put her back in the Oscar game. Until the movie is seen, and she had like 10 minutes of screentime. At least that won't happen here with French Exit since it's a definite lead role. And there's already a campaign prepared specifically for her. But of course this could just be another disappointment, but after reading the "review" from the New York Times, I feel much better about her chances now.

Frank Bruni is a respected journalist who writes Op Ed pieces for the NYT. He's a very good writer and an astute political commentator. Praise from someone like Bruni can only help her chances IMO.
I don't foresee the same fate befalling FE as did Mother. Mother was a deliberately outrageous, experimental and contentious film. It was divisive and Academy voters ignored it completely. I don't think that's the case w/ FE.
The biggest challenge is capturing the book's absurdist tone and surreal style. Its' a slippery slope and I hope Jacobs and DeWitt pulled it off.
Either way, it sounds like Michelle's performance is reason enough to see the film and it may be good enough to land her a Best Actress nomination.
