Darrin Navarro calls FRENCH EXIT "sublimely droll". He's biased but I hope he's right.

You know what, this explains why this film is not also doing Toronto or Venice festivals. He knew he couldn't finish in time for those but felt he could have it done by October so they went with NYFF. I think they were also in the running to be Opening Night or Centerpiece (both in September) too instead of Closing night but were waiting to see if he could finish in time, because the producer told me "Sept or October for NYFF" before it was announced for Closing Night in October.

But if he hasn't finished the film yet, how could the NYFF review board decided it was good enough to be accepted?
Maybe they viewed a rough cut and said yes?

Hopefully we'll see the finished version I have to think that was part of the deal to play NYFF, it has to be finished by the time it screens. But then again, Halle Berry has a film she directed playing at TIFF and that is not finished.

Variety reported today that Olivia Colman will go supporting for THE FATHER, so if Michelle is in the race, that's one less competitor. I'll take what small victories I can get.

I saw the trailer today and Colman going supporting makes sense. It’s clearly Hopkins’ film. Looks quite good, incidentally

I'm a bit surprised that virtual screenings for this film have still not sold out, and only one of the drive-in screenings has sold out.

I guess since this is its debut, tickets have only been bought by those who have been anticipating and following it. It's not coming into this festival with the reviews and audience reaction Nomadland has had so far. Hopefully if it's good and gets another festival appearance, it'll generate more excitement.

Good point. Also, don't forget NYFF is doing a free preview of the festival TODAY at 5:30 pm eastern time, you have to register for free and it's via ZOOM. Hope they mention FE and Michelle: www.filmlinc.org/nyff2020/films/free-talk-nyff58-kick-off/

Welp they did not discuss this film, they mainly focused on the smaller films. Oh well.
They did mention that the Talks lineup for the festival will be announced tomorrow and they will all be live and streamed online worldwide, so hopefully Michele and Lucas and Azazel will be in the lineup.

I like it. It's more breezy and upbeat than I was thinking they were going for, but then again I don't know the context of how this music will be used. Still, I like it.

The Co-President of Elevation implied that this was rejected by TIFF:
"French Exit is one of the few films ever in Canadian co-production history that was prebought for distribution by a major U.S. studio, Sony Pictures Classics. It’s a real success story: It got into the New York Film Festival, not TIFF for whatever reason, but once again there, Canadians are not supporting their own. ..."

Wow...sounds like that left a sting. Maybe there were different deadlines for the two fests and the folks at TIFF were unhappy with the potentially unfinished version, or maybe didn't even want to see/consider a version that was unfinished.

I'm a bit surprised that virtual screenings for this film have still not sold out, and only one of the drive-in screenings has sold out. Keep in mind Nomadland is coming off the Venice win and buzz for the film and McDormand is huge. No wonder it sold out. I wish I had acted faster. I might have gotten a ticket. Still wanting a FE trailer and official poster.

When do you think we'll get a trailer?? I mean maybe a poster and hopefully some stills could surface cuz of this festival, but I wonder if we won't get a trailer until closer to release. That seems to be the trend with certain films these days more than ever.
I think this is also the first time I'll be seeing a film of Michelle's, a new film at least, in its entirety before I ever see a trailer for it lol

Variety put up their pre-season Oscar predictions. Unless they have some inside knowledge, it's a little weird that Pfeiffer is at number 1 (above the actresses whose movies have already been seen). But I'll take any good buzz that I can get, hehe.
AND THE PREDICTED NOMINEES ARE: 1. Michelle Pfeiffer: "French Exit" (Sony Pictures Classics) 2. Frances McDormand - "Nomadland" (Netflix) 3. Vanessa Kirby - "Pieces of a Woman" (Netflix) 4. Viola Davis† - "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" (Netflix) 5. Rachel Zegler - "West Side Story" (20th Century Studios)
NEXT IN LINE CONTENDERS: 6. Jennifer Hudson: "Respect" (United Artists Releasing) 7. Kate Winslet: "Ammonite" (Neon) 8. Amy Adams: "Hillbilly Elegy" (Netflix) 9. Carey Mulligan: "Promising Young Woman" (Focus Features) 10. Andra Day: "The United States vs. Billie Holiday" (Paramount Pictures)
