It really is impossible to tell at this point.
I'd like to see SCP take advantage of a potentially weak year in the Best Actress category (what a sad statement about the industry - year after year) and release it when Michelle has an advantage. But then, I selfishly want her to have some red carpet moments and be able to attend the ceremony in person, if she's nominated. As a fan, I want her to have the spotlight she deserves and I don't see that happening this year with the pandemic.
I hope to hell we get new leadership this fall.

This film editor told Anne Thompson she has seen French Exit and was impressed:

Yup! Glad that they’re at the post-production screening stage

She's probably a little biased if she went to a friends and family screening of it, but oh well lol.
On another note, a media analyst said he doesn't expect the majority of movie theaters to be open again until mid-2021. Ugh.

Well if that’s the case, then just put it out there along with the other films holding on for theatrical release. Critics groups are still gonna be voting, Oscars (so far) are still being held and if it’s indeed not the most competitive year for actresses, I’d rather French Exit take advantage of that, even if it means no theatrical release for it

Warners just moved Tenet again, this time to TBD. Really just sucks. I'm not hopeful it will be any better in the fall or winter, either.

Also, Sony Classics just dated one of their other films for October. I doubt that will stick lol.

tomorrow the list of films participating at the Venice film festival will be announced .... I am eagerly awaiting the announcement.... Frances McDormand's new film is premiering at both Toronto and Venice and New York Fest and Searchlight announced a Fall release in theaters (good luck with that). The last thing Frances needs is another nomination and win. So damn boring. I love her, but come on.

bad news .... french kiss is not part of the films selected for the venetian competition although various films made in u.s.a. are present in the competition .... at this point there are various possibilities: 1) the film may not yet be ready 2) the film may not be as good as we tought.... we wait to see if it will be selected by other festivals

I think it has more to do with COVID and the distributor not really knowing what to do. It sounds like it's just about finished if they did a "friends and family" screening. Venice also said they will likely add more films to the festival later. Also, studios and distributors are concerned about piracy and don't want their films to be shown digitally like they would be at Toronto this year. Could be a factor as well.

I didn't think this would premiere at Venice even before Covid-19. It is more suited to TIFF. I wouldn't even be surprised if SPC ended up skipping the fall festivals and dropped this at Sundance 2020 and released not long after. Would still be eligible for Oscars.

Also, the Venice lineup is void of American studio films in general, really the only American films are Nomadland and one other I think. It's just a different year with all of the uncertainty going on.

There's so much at play. Studios are just now beginning to announce production start dates and even those are subject to change depending on what the future holds. Forget firm release dates. Look at Tenet among other big movies that keep getting bounced from date to date. Some of 2021 will be filled with 2020 films because they can't afford to write-off huge box-office money with theaters still shut down. Harder to say about the fate of smaller independent films like FE. I suppose SCP has already screened the director's cut and will soon decide what to do regarding film festivals and a release date. If they need to do pick-ups or reshoots, that could delay it - no idea - but if the recent buzz about it being well received at family and friends screenings is accurate , that shouldn't be an issue.
My instinct tells me it will go to Toronto if SCP thinks it has awards potential, but who the hell knows? Very frustrating.

I will say i'm glad this is the movie that is coming out during the pandemic and not something dependent on huge box-office numbers. Getting an awards hopeful film like French Exit seen by voters and critics is easier to manage during something like this. If she had been in something purely for the audience, I'd really be freaking out about it not reaching it's potential. I was actually thinking the other day how sad it would have been had Maleficent 2 stayed with its original release date we would either not have seen it at all, or I woulda have had to get Disney plus finally, never mind about it making anywhere close to the $400-500 million it somehow brought in.
I suppose there is some worry of French Exit not reaching it's full potential even tho critics are being really good about seeing the early awards fare so far. Shirley, The Truth, Hope Gap, etc have done a decent job at getting seen by critics groups. I just got an email about IFC's late Summer/Fall slate and I'm covering a film fest next month remotely, so for a lot of these companies, it's business as usual in a way. But I suspect a lot of it also has to do with awards timing in general, which has become more of a science each year, not least of all this year.

Universal and AMC just reached an agreement to limit the theatrical window to 17 days, meaning their films can go to video-on-demand after just 17 days in theaters. I'm sure other studios and theaters will make similar deals now. This is bad for indie studios and films. I hate this.

AMC probably felt they had to do this moveto be able to survive, but this will kill the small arthouse theaters. On another note, the Venice festival director said this: Why are there so few American films in the lineup? We are still discussing several titles with producers and we’ll see in the next few days if they can come or not.

If this doesn't do Toronto, then I assume they are holding it for Fall 2021. I don't think just doing one festival like Sundance would be good enough to generate enough buzz. And remember the makeup artist said it would be doing most of the major festivals before COVID happened. That tells me SPC thought it would need a big festival run.

Sony Classics title The Father is in the Toronto lineup but no French Exit. Really small lineup as expected. I think they’re going to hold it for FALL 2021 and take it to as many festivals as possible

Telluride released what their lineup was going to be had the festival actually taken place and French Exit is not on it, but The Father is. Very curious. The makeup artist said it was going to do most of the festivals. Maybe she got bad info lol. Definitely looking like a 2021 release. Which is fine by me. Hopefully things are better then.

I guess it comes down to what scenario can her work and the film in general survive more: a weak best actress year with less festival exposure, or a more stacked year with usual festival exposure? Is it better to go against less competition, or more? More festival appearances, or less??
I’ve been thinking, I’m wondering if Coleman is gonna be pushed for supporting. Everything about her role and roles like it in recent times seems like supporting (I keep thinking of how Julia Roberts went supporting for August: Osage County). Even the poster With Hopkins in the forefront indicates her character is supporting. If SPC wants a Best Actress contender for the year, it’s got to be Michelle unless they do decide to push Coleman into lead, which would give her less chances depending on what kind of role she’s got.
But never mind, I feel like none of us here knows anything and speculating isn’t getting us anywhere in terms of useful, verified information. The only thing that matters is what the studio decides to do and sadly we’re a slave to waiting for their decisions

One aspect of this that Sony Classics might be considering is, having enough films to put out next year, given that filming has stalled for everything and everyone due to COVID and they (and every other studio and distributor) will want to have something big on their schedule for 2021 if they can, because who knows when filming will be able to really start up again.

I know! Every day there are different reports of stuff shooting or stuff that’s delaying shooting. Artists have been filming music videos under strict protocols and Tyler Perry has his quarantine compound where he and his casts and crews are filming stuff. It’s just so up in the air. On a similar note, I CAN’T stop thinking about what project Michelle has “lined up.” I know I just poo poo’d speculating about stuff, but I wish I at least knew what she was referring to. Lol

So I'm hesitant to post this since she quickly deleted it, meaning she probably wasn't supposed to say anything yet, but I asked the producer on Instagram if it's safe to assume this film is being held for 2021 now, and she replied "New York (Film) Fest Sept or Oct 2020!"

Hmmm...well, I think you’re right. She probably wasn’t meant to say anything. But as long as we keep it in here, I’m sure it’s fine. Interesting. That is a good film fest to show at. Although it isn’t Venice or Toronto, it’s stature gets higher every year. I would also love to see the film play at AFI and Deauville film fests...if that’s even possible lol
