At this point I wouldn't be surprised if SPC holds this until next year. Me either, but they could still make money this year (depending on how things play out with theaters) and if they see it as an awards play (at least for Pfeiffer), it would be best to get it out this year if possible. Competition will likely be pretty thin this year (and STACKED next year) and she could steamroll if she has the reviews to do so.

I for one would not mind this movie coming out in a year when the number of contenders for the best actress category is pretty thin lol

If it does, I am almost 100% confident this film will be screened as part of their lineup, virtual or regular, it's a Canadian co-production.

I'm going to the Zurich Film Festival this fall, "French Exit" could very well be screened there, it's not a big festival with splashy premieres but it's an opportunity to show the film in Europe. Cate Blanchett attended the festival last year.

Sony Classics just sold a film that was on the release calendar to HBO Max. I don't think this will happen with French Exit, this other film didn't have any stars in it, but you never know.

Yes just seen this news. It won't happen with FE. Hoping not anyway as you say they have stars with Michelle and Lucas and they already picked up before filming.

It seems that many films with Best Actress contenders are being pushed to 2021, such as Blonde with Ana de Armas, J-Law's new film (indie drama) and a few others. LA Times had a recent article about films and delays and all the different distributors, but no mention of French Exit for Sony Classics, just The Father. I probably only because they are not sure if it will be finished soon and haven't seen a first cut, perhaps. I think they'd be crazy not to release it this year if theaters are open and it's finished.

Azazel was asked on his Instagram a week ago if this was still coming out this year and his response was working every day on finishing. He didn't really answer the question though. Maybe SPC want to hold some films for 2021.

Maybe. Maybe the deal is that if he can finish it by a certain date, it’ll get released this year. In other news, I’m gonna be reviewing Shirley starring Elisabeth Moss out next month. I saw the trailer and she looks like the first real Best Actress competition I’ve seen this year. It’s starting. Gonna be stiff now that the academy made that announcement 😐

Looks like they finally added two people to the music department for this, music supervisors and their company helps producers and directors find the best music for their films and also helps find music composers for the films, so maybe they are inching closer to having the score done and completing the film.

Don't know why they can't at least give us a still from the film to wet our appetite? Been in Post Production since Dec.

The Venice Film Festival announced today that they are still going forward with this years festival in September. I just don't see how they can, Lol, but whatever.

I'm starting to solidify my thinking that they will hold it for 2021. Now watch after I say that, we'll get some news about a 2020 release date tomorrow, Lol.

Could be a number of factors. Maybe SPC are waiting to see how things pan out with the fall festivals or maybe they might want to hold off for a 2021 release so they have projects to release next year. I hope we get some confirmation soon.

There is still so much up in the air.
I think I read that Venice is on but I don't know what's happening with Toronto, Telluride or the others. Will Venice be virtual or traditional red-carpet / in-person screenings under socially distant guidelines? Will press conferences be virtual or in person? Will celebs even agree to travel without a proven vaccine in place?
I'm wondering too if smaller, art house films will all be streamed now with fewer in-person theaters and many people saying they'd rather watch those films at home vs. a theater. And if that happens, would those films qualify for Oscar consideration without a traditional in-theater run?
I would think smaller distributors and investors will delay some releases to create cash flow over a longer period of time since production has been stalled since mid-March.
So - I'm full of questions, but no answers.

It’s so hard to say. I just reviewed Shirley from Neon via screening link (side note, Oscar hopefuls should watch out for Moss!! 😬) and I’m reviewing the Steve carrel comedy called irresistible directed by Jon Stewart from Focus Features, who are sending me a link. Later this month I’m reviewing a horror film from Universal also through link. Moss did the junket interviews from her home and I’ve seen talk shows do the same with guests who have projects coming out now. I dunno...
I’m thinking this is the way more smaller films are going to go, at least this year since the bigger ones care more about the big screen experience and the smaller ones main goal is just to be seen at all. It’s all anyone’s guess. Some theaters are still hoping to reopen this month as well lol

This has finally been added to the "Coming Soon" section on the Stage6 Films website. Stage6 is the international distribution arm of Sony. Sadly no new image, still or poster, just an image of the text of the book cover. www.stage6films.com/coming-soon

Well, still early summer. I’d love for this to play at as many fall fests that it can. Ppl tend to only look at the high profile ones, but a lot of buzz can come out of smaller ones as well

If it keeps its January date, that’s only 3 months before the oscars now lol. Crazy. Maybe Sony Classics will hold this for Sundance then release it shortly after?

Definitely a possibility. Be interesting to see what happens now the awards eligibility has been pushed back. If this was considered as an awards contender would seem silly for SPC to hold it off any longer.

Yeah and not to mention this is terrible news for Venice and Toronto, they are now 8 months ahead of the Oscars, lol, unless they now also move their festival dates.

Yea, all of us at Austin Film Critics Assoc are now wondering if we’re gonna push our voting deadline further too. I feel that we’ve gotta, otherwise we’ll miss out on a lot of key screeners, the ones who always wait until the last minute to hold last minute screenings

Netflix just bought Trial of the Chicago Seven from Paramount. This film was also produced and financed by Rocket Science. I wonder if SPC will try to sell it and just get what they can for it? Even though theaters say they’ll reopen soon, COVID cases are going up in a lot of places and the situation doesn’t look good at all.

Venice says they are going ahead with a physical festival and red carpet. Woo-boy. I wonder if any celebs will refuse to attend out of health concerns. I would not blame them.

That's good news.
It could vary based on the celebrity and the travel / hotel / press conference details. Some stars may choose to attend in person, others might only do virtual press appearances. I doubt they are all going to crowd into a movie theater and watch a film together. Seems too risky. Plus, we don't know if another Covid wave is coming later this summer or fall. Nothing is certain anymore. My control issues are getting a severe workout this year.
I also can't imagine Michelle taking any chances with her health at this stage in her life.
