Sometimes I think it does depend on the combined package of price offered and release strategy. Other times, I think it depends on the producers/filmmakers and who they feel is the best company to handle their film.

In Cannes 2019 we got the annuncenmet of French Exit, they sell it to Sony and filming began later that year. So maybe this is going to be the same, finishing at the end of the year to begin january 2023 promoting Ant-Mant 3.

Hope filming starts in the coming months. SPC deal wasn't disclosed for French Exit until September after it was taken to Cannes in May. This has already sold out internationally pretty quickly. Hopefully they already have someone decent lined up for domestic. It would have been nice if the trades had given some indication of when filming might begin.
It's funny though as none of her Cannes projects so far have given any details about filming dates.

I'm glad Platt is behind this. I feel like he's a shrewd producer who will get the film into a decent home. The majority of his projects, regardless of size or profile, have had no trouble getting out there. I trust he'll do right by this one.

Slim pickings but Protagonist site have moved the project back in to Pre Production. It was originally when the film was announced but then they moved it to New Projects. Hopefully a sign the film is moving along and we get some more news soon.

Michelle is doing a live Q&A on Instagram Live tomo and is taking questions. Can we all ask her when she starts work on her next project? Probably won't answer anyway.

Without a US distribution deal, I don't see this moving forward. It's curious they finalized international sales so quickly but a domestic deal has not happened yet. This is the frustrating pattern of indie films that go to festivals seeking financial backing and they never come to fruition.

They could still have someone in place but not announced yet. French Exit was announced in May and SPC deal wasn't announced till Sept.

Saoirse Ronan's new film with Protagonist is currently filming and has secured international deals but not a domestic distributor yet.

Hopefully this will be Michelle's next project now after it seems confirmed she is no longer a part of Megalopolis. I hope it starts shooting this year.
Stage 6 Films have recently started following Bleecker Street and Sony Pictures Classics on Instagram and Protagonist have recently starting following Sony Pictures Classics. Stage 6 Films seem to have a relationship with both but particularly Bleecker Street as they have taken US rights to a lot of the films recently where Stage 6 have taken international rights. I think I would actually prefer Bleecker Street over SPC. SPC really did a horrible marketing job with French Exit. I just think Bleecker Street would put in more of an effort if this was to be an awards contender than SPC. Bleecker Street may not be the blockbuster studio but they do have some hits and some recent lovely films - A Love Song, Montana Story, Mass. Watch it not be either now lol.

Just on the off chance I messaged Peter Craig on Twitter, not thinking he would reply but he did. I just asked if any idea when filming will begin.
"Trying, brother. No start date yet; but it’ll happen at some point ".
This was his reply. Doesn't sound like it is starting anytime soon unfortunately. Maybe next year then.

Financing, casting, scheduling? Maybe they're having difficulty finding a director everyone can agree on. I hope this isn't another Turn Of Mind.

I thought Craig was going to be the director of this. But it could be any of the above tbh. Just gotta wait and see. At least we've got some new Michelle coming early next year, even if it is just superhero fare

Yeah Peter Craig is on board to direct this himself which will be his directorial debut. Maybe they are still working out financing or maybe still trying to sort out all the cast and crew. I just hate these films announced during a festival and then you're always left wondering if it will ever happen.
Would be nice if Michelle could attach herself to something else shooting this fall seeing as the production date for this doesn't seem to be anytime soon.

Didn't she say she was done working for this year, though? That's probably all it is, imo, just waiting for her to be ready to film.

I agree, it would be nice if she attached herself to something before the year is out. Supporting or lead, it doesn't really matter as long as it's something that's a definite go ahead with a studio/distributor already attached
Yea, I think I remember reading that she wasn't going to be working anymore this year. Can't recall where I read that, but it sounds familiar.

I wonder if michelle has ever been considered for the role of the director of the jury at the venice film festival, a role played this year by julianne moore, in the past years by cate Blanchett and annette bening and other famous actresses; or if perhaps the role was offered to her and she refused, considering it too difficult; anyway in my opinion it would be nice to see her at the helm of a jury of a prestigious film festival also to meet new talented directors who could offer her interesting job proposals

I think they not only want esteemed actors/directors for that job, but also cinephiles and Pfeiffer doesn't really come off as a cinephile. Moore and Blanchett do, and they are. Which sounds so pretentious but you know what I mean? I'm sure there's a better way to say what I mean lol.

I know what you mean. There's something about their output of work and their tendency to say yes to riskier projects more than Michelle does. I think that's whats put them in that category. I also feel that they're willing to have more of a relationship with the industry than Michelle is. They're willing to engage with it regularly whereas Michelle only does so when she has to. At least that's the impression I get.

Huh. Well Peter Craig is directing a new drama series along with Ridley Scott in February 2023. Hope this does not mean this project is dead.

Peter is only directing one episode from what I've heard so can't imagine should take up too much of his time.

Well…as long as it’s only one episode. I guess that’s okay. But yea, if this doesn’t happen by spring at the latest, I’m gonna call it a day on this one

In better news, because I was fed up Michelle wasn't at the CCA's. I decided to message Peter Craig again, just asking if this was still happening and he replied straight away. His response:
"yes but won’t start shooting until late ‘23 because of scheduling issues. Should be finished fall of ‘24".

Yea, I think it’s safe to assume that Michelle is still linked to this. Maybe the scheduling issues are also pertaining to her involvement with that Sylvia’s Second Act project??
