I really love this review from The Washington Post: But it’s Pfeiffer — and the funny, generous, cruel and bluntly confrontational Frances — who takes firm possession of “French Exit” and never lets go. Along with 2017’s “Where is Kyra?,” “French Exit” winds up being a heady celebration of late-career Pfeiffer, which might be the best Pfeiffer to date. She’s still an astonishing beauty, but now that her looks have been tempered by time, she’s newly liberated to prove what a gifted actress she’s been all along. www.washingtonpost.com/goingoutguide/movies/french-exit-movie-review/2021/03/30/1ff923a8-90b6-11eb-a74e-1f4cf89fd948_story.html

Considering we are still in a pandemic that isn't too bad.

Considering we are still in a pandemic that isn't too bad. That and in spite of the abysmal release strategy - and I use that term loosely.

I know what you mean. There still aren't blu ray releases of a few of her films over here in the US. What Lies Beneath being the most surprising for me. Te next one will be in Blu-ray is "Sweet Liberty", which will be released in May 4 2021 in Canada. Great! Never saw that one, will absolutely buy this blu ray! Thanks for the tip!

At some point (dunno when), SPC uploaded a draft of the script. Tempted to take a gander at it, but I also dunno if I wanna wait and be surprised by the deleted scenes on the blu ray. They’re the only special features listed on the release

Hi, guys. So, I'm trying to rent the film online. However, I'm having trouble doing it since I'm not based in the U.S. So, my question is, have any of you, the ones living outside of the U.S., had this problem and what have you guys done to get past it?

Oh it must be geoblocked? In that case I doubt a VPN would work either, they probably base it on your credit card and where that is located. Maybe I'll ask Azazel when it might be available in other countries.

I think it will goes to other countries too, even in Hong Kong they are now available to purchase/rent online, but unfortunately, which also means the film won't have chance to show in cinema....

I finally got to see French Exit, and I really really love it! It's probably one of my most favorite things that Michelle has ever done. Definitely my cup of tea. I don't find the pacing slow or meandering at all (as some critics and some of you have said), I was engaged and captivated from start to finish. I had the impression that it's going to be an ensemble once the other characters start appearing, but Pfeiffer remained front and center and was pretty much in every scene. The dialogue's a little pretentious and precious (kinda reminds me of Ingrid's tendency to wax poetic in White Oleander), but everybody made it sound so natural and effortless even if people don't really talk the way the characters did.
As for Pfeiffer, it's a great role and performance. She has really become a much more pared down actress, so confident and evocative without hitting you over the head of what she's trying to convey. She has become more comfortable with ambiguity and simplicity. However, within the context of awards and the Oscars in particular, I think she lacked that one big killer scene to put her over the top. I have not read the book, so I don't know if they've cut any monologue or any significant dramatic scene. But still, I would've nominated her over McDormand and Kirby.
Finally, I find the movie kinda haunting in a melancholic way, I cannot stop thinking about it after seeing it. I had this lingering feeling that I'm really going to miss seeing the quirky little world that Azazel Jacobs created. That's why I think French Exit is going to be one of those movies that I'm going to watch over and over again, just like my other favorite Michelle movies, which are:
1. The Fabulous Baker Boys 2. Married to the Mob 3. Frankie and Johnny 4. French Exit 5. Love Field/One Fine Day
And just for the record, these are my personal picks for her best movies/performances:
Michelle's Best Performances 1. White Oleander 2. Batman Returns 3. The Fabulous Baker Boys 4. The Wizard of Lies (She's so good in this movie!) 5. Frankie and Johnny/Dangerous Liaisons
Michelle's Best Movies 1. The Age of Innocence 2. The Fabulous Baker Boys 3. Dangerous Liaisons 4. Married to the Mob 5. Where is Kyra?

You've read the book, right? So you'd probably be less fixated on what was left out from the book on your second viewing.

Just got the DVD today (Blu-ray not arrived yet ) and there's total 4 deleted/extended scenes. Two of them already published earlier, another two are a short phone conversation with Joan in her house where she sit on her makeup chair, and a extended chat with captain on the ship which she talked about her mother.

SPC actually added theaters for this in the US recently and last weekend it only averaged $135 bucks per screen (19 screens). No idea why they thought that was a good idea. Might as well have just held it completely until after everything opened back up. It has made 1 and a half million worldwide, though.
