That's the Hollywood Reporter critic!
Also, this lady gave it 4 stars on Letterboxd and also tweeted in addition to leaving a review:

Two really bad ratings and reviews on Letterboxd now. Ugh I hope this won't be that divisive.

Two really bad ratings and reviews on Letterboxd now. Ugh I hope this won't be that divisive. They seem to have deleted them. One of them was1 star and said "Repulsive with no soul"

Interesting...I wonder why they were deleted. Maybe the reviewers changed their opinions??

Interesting...I wonder why they were deleted. Maybe the reviewers changed their opinions?? Maybe, or realized there was an embargo. I have a feeling this might be pretty divisive, but hopefully not as much as mother! was.

Kinda expected some of these kind of reviews. Certain ppl want to have the feels and root for likable characters and this was never gonna be that kinda movie

Yeah that was my main concern with this one. That woman gave it 3 stars on Letterboxd. Not bad. We'll see how the trades and other print reviews go. Think this might be Golden Globes or bust.

I'm thinking it might have a slight snob appeal if she said all that but felt somewhat cold about it? Maybe that's not so bad. Critics tend to like films that are slightly unemotional and inaccessible. Let's wait for more reviews. I'm really looking forward to hearing Anne Thompson's take on this. She has a really good barometer of the taste of the Academy.

That's the point - these characters are meant to leave you cold. The story is meant to leave you feeling nothing much for them. Somewhat like Age Of Innocence, you aren't going to get that big emotional payoff at the end with big flourishes and technicolor sunsets. There aren't a lot of warm and fuzzies with characters who are so repressed and in the case of FE - unlikeable, empty.
I can tell some of these reviewers have not read the book (not a requirement either) but there should be some awareness of the source material.
Still, overall, these reactions are highly favorable, highly encouraging for the performances and the film.

I'm glad she seems to be over the melodramatic phase of Deep End of the Ocean, A Thousand Ares, Up close and Personal, The Story of Us etc. Her recent streak of Where is Kyra, Wizard of Lies, mother!, and (probably) French Exit is more reminiscent of her glory days in the late 80's and early 90's.

Yes, exactly, the mommy / Oprah Book Club phase in which some of her choices felt uninspired to me - although we got WO which was tough as nails and her Rose in Acres was as embittered as they come. I definitely see this role as Globes friendly and if the major critics heap praise on her, she is likely to land a Best Actress nomination. The one caveat being the film - if it is bad or misses the mark, that could hurt her chances. I also wonder how the film will play to Academy members. It’s likely to be viewed as a performance driven piece but the sour characters and absurdist tone may not hit ‘em where they live.

What you guys have said about the character is the reason I'm probably most excited. I see so many movies where characters have been compromised to death in order to make them likeable, accessible and heroic so as to appeal to the average Joe. Good or bad, all I care about as an audience member is: "who is this person, truthfully?" I don't care who they've been manufactured to be. That's not authentic. Humans generally aren't built that way. I think that's why I'm drawn to anti-heroes as much as I am. They tend to reflect the real-life gray so many of us in the real world exist in.

Someone on Twitter - Can't wait to talk more about the finale — French Exit — the embargo is still up, but what a way to close #NYFF I wonder if they mean the film's finale, or if they're referring to the film general, which they're calling the finale of the festival. Oh, who gives a turd, we'll soon find out lol

Azazel did a radio interview this morning, which you can listen to here and they play an audio clip from the film before he comes on. This is not what I expected her to sound like. www.wnyc.org/story/all-of-it-2020-10-08/

Hmm...no, it's definitely an interesting choice and an unexpected one. Bit of a mix of Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons and Moira Rose. I need to see how it plays on screen before I can decide if I like it or not, but I definitely don't outright hate it...what does everyone else think??

Honestly, I was not crazy about it, but it's not fair to judge without seeing and hearing the whole film. The actor opposite her however...yikes.

I can hear Shalit saying that, actually lol
I felt the other actor was playing it as if his character is intimidated by Michelle's character...but to be fair, I wasn't paying that much attention to him lol I was trying to picture what Michelle's gestures and face were like ha ha

Just listened. Sounded ok I have to admit that I was trying to keep my expectations for this film "low" to avoid disappointment. But now after following this thread and the things people are saying about the film on social media I'm getting super excited I'm so glad some of you get to watch the film and can't wait to hear what you think
