I haven't read or seen Death on the Nile, but there are roles for three older actresses it looks like. I bet Judi Dench will play one of them. If Dench were to be cast, she would probably play the role Bette Davis played in the original as it suits her in age and acting style. Maggie Smith's role in the original was so bare, I forgot she was even a part of it. Angela Lansbury's role in the movie as an alcoholic author was a fun one, but rather on the small side...a bit like Dench's role in Orient Express. Anyhow, Michelle aside, as a Christie fan I'm surprised, happily, by this news. It shows there IS an audience for these kinds of movies n they're actually turning up to see them.

I'd gladly watch another one. I've never read or seen a version of this story either.
Is there a role in this you would have liked Pfeiffer to play, had she not done 'Murder'?

It's not my favorite mainly cuz it's a bit on the obvious side. But I think that Mia Farrow's role as the scorned woman whose fiance was stolen by her former friend, who is the murder victim, is the best female part in it. Farrow was in her early 30s when she played the role tho as it was written for a woman of that age. Angela Lansbury was nominated for a Bafta and won another award as Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film so maybe I need to revisit it.

I wonder if they would even want to cast actors from this one for the sequels 'American Horror Story' style or want a fresh cast.

I'm sure Dench n Jacobi will be in it since Branagh likes to cast them when he can

I like death on the nile. It is a much more enjoyable ride than murder in my opinion . Mia farrow is the star so I hope Jessica chastin gets the part. I don’t see a part for Michelle in this one.

Deadline is projecting it will hit $85.6M this weekend. This movie has impressive staying power, still placing in the Top 5 / 6 after four weeks in theaters. Worldwide gross is well over $200M now. Not certain it will hit $100M domestic, but it will easily reach $90M before it leaves theaters.
With meh reviews, it has exceeded forecasts and while it’s far from perfect, there is a market out there of older audiences who still love a good matinee. Interesting that Murder has consistently outperformed Daddy’s Home on weekdays since day one. Retirees have made this film a hit.

I have been surprised by how many younger people have gone to see it. I have seen it twice and there were far more young people than older. They love it on social media, too.

Deadline says it will make another $5M this weekend, bringing the total to $92.9M in the US. Could it make $100M before it's over? Maybe.
Worldwide it has grossed $245M so far.
Amazing how popular this film has become. I did not expect that.
I watched the 1974 version last night. Have to say in retrospect it was indeed a better film, mostly due to the cast and director Sidney Lumet giving each character sufficient screen time and better dialog to make you care about them. But I still do not understand how Ingrid Bergman walked away with an Oscar for that irritating performance. I like Branagh's ending much better though. The focus he put on the Armstrong family, the depth of their loss, and especially Michelle's character made the ending more emotional for me.

It's going to come awfully close to $100 million, I think it might get there, it's still in over 3,000 theatres for the time being, right?

This makes me just so excited...not just that Michelle has a hit, not just a moderate hit, but a hit hit under her belt again n that she's as big a part of it as she is. But also cuz I love that ppl r responding to this movie, that there is an audience for it cuz I wasn't sure that there would be tbh!! Christmas has come early for me in a way lol I'll always love Lumet's version...the thing I think is most effective bout his compared to Branagh's was how he introduced the Armstrong case and the details of it. I thought it was very mysterious n well done...The scene in Branagh's just felt a little too lacking in terms of relaying the details to the audience. Thankfully tho, his emotional pay off made up for it n was in some ways, stronger than Lumet's Agree bout Ingrid. She's good, but no Oscar-worthy. They should have given it to Madeline Kahn who was also nominated that year for Blazing Saddles.

Yep, it’s playing in just over 3,000 theatres but that number will likely drop next weekend with the release of several new films. Regardless, Fox could keep it going in limited release throughout the holiday season and it could hit the $100M mark by year end if people keep turning out.
Murder’s commercial success makes me happy too. It offsets the disappointment of Kyra not being released and the lack of awards love for her superior work in mother!.
All things considered, this has been quite a year and let’s not forget her Emmy nomination for WOL or her stunning vocal on the song from MOTOE.
Even if that song isn’t nominated, it would be a natural for the In Memorium segment of the Oscars.

Wow!! I NEVER woulda thought $100 domestically...man, these figures have made every Sunday a little more enjoyable since the movie came out!! If I had the time, I would look at all her hit films and, after adjusting for inflation, see which have been her biggest moneymakers...I'm glad this is one of them since I literally thought only me n a few small handful of people around the world would see MOTHOE

If she sings at the Oscars, it will be like if she wins an Oscar and this fact will do more air and wings (and visibility) to her excelent career. It would be a great night.

Worldwide gross as of Sunday Dec. 31 is $326M - nearly six times the unconfirmed production cost of $55M. With additional revenues in the future from Streaming and DVD releases, this film is a huge hit and a sequel seems likely. Keep in mind though that Disney just bought Fox in a $54.2 Billion stock deal and that will impact the kind of films the new combined studio makes in the future. Fox could become Disney's ticket to awards worthy, prestige films and with their eye planted firmly on the bottom line, they may court directors like Branagh who make films that appeal to audiences beyond the comic book / family friendly universe. I think Branagh intends to film Death On The Nile next, and if true, I wonder if he will pursue Michelle for a role in that. Don't remember a thing about the plot but there are a few roles for older actresses that were played by Maggie Smith, Bette Davis and Angela Lansbury in the original.
Question on the table is - do we want her to do another all star Agatha Christie murder mystery?
I'd rather see her continue in the Indie / Kyra lane and really challenge herself.
Thoughts? Opinions?

This film was nominated for Best Art Direction in a Period Film by the Art Directors Guild, so that's something at least.
