I have just asked Azazel Jacobs on Instagram some news about French Exit He answered « will share when I can ! » They better hurry up before she starts painting again and changes her mind. Well I am surprised again that Jacobs answered my new question on Instagram about the shooting, his answer is « Still a bit ahead »... http://instagram.com/p/By8o5DAHP7_

I don't think filming will begin before August. He is possibly waiting on his frequent DP Tobias Datum to finish up on Kevin Hart's Fatherhood.

It's nice of him to answer you and others, a lot of other directors, etc. wouldn't even bother.

Most likely Valli O'Reilly who seems to be her new makeup artist for film shoots.

IMDB has this down as filming. Think they're a bit premature though.

NYC is probably far too expensive.

Azazel said the other day that filming is still a bit ahead so don't believe this has officially started yet.

Maybe it's just Tracy Letts who has started doing his voice work for the film?

It could be second unit filming, which doesn't always have to involve cast members or even the director. Also, Toronto is oftentimes used as a stand-in for NYC on smaller-scale productions. I think if the story was only shot in New York, they would have shot it there. But two major cities is kinda pricey

I'm sure Azazel will confirm when filming has officially started. Hope we get the rest of the cast announced soon.

I'm guessing the rest of the cast will be character actors, not really big names, but who knows. Pfeiffer hasn't posted anything new in almost 6 days, so maybe she is off busy getting ready to get to work.

I haven't read the book, just descriptions and reviews, but it sounds like these characters are part of what makes it so interesting and goofy. Did you like the book overall? I saw someone say it will be the best role for her in decades, would you agree with that?

This movie is gonna be a period costume movie right? Hard to say, the book never really makes it clear, I guess just going by reviews. I have seen people guess it's the 1980's or earlier and some people say it's modern day.

I think it's really depends on the directing style, I like the book and her character seems an interesting one, but I hope they will extend her part a bit more since there's just too many other characters in the book.

So I started reading the book on the plane on my way from Austin to London and I finished more than half of it on the way over. It’s such a darkly funny book and has such a texture and richness to it. The characters are so intricately woven, especially Frances. Her character has the same power as the character Michelle played in White Oleander simply for the way she’s able to be such a strong presence even in scenes she’s not even in. The character is so layered and interesting. You don’t necessarily like Frances, but you feel empathy for her. It’s yet ANOTHER example of a role which has shades of what Michelle likes to do but is also totally unlike anything she’s done before!! Can’t wait to finish it!! This is gonna be such an interesting movie!!
Incidentally, if any fellow London-based forum members are about while I’m here on my vacation week and feel like meeting up for a pint to say hello and talk about Michelle, private message me!!

What time period do you feel this story is set in? Or are you not able to tell so far? I hope you're able to meet up with other fans, that would be cool. I'm not sure how many here are in London, maybe some from other parts of the UK? I like that she has so many fans from so many different places.

I like that she does too!!
I have a feeling it's more modernish...but it hasn't really said so so far. There's a mention in the book about how Frances like to indulge in reality TV, specifically shows where people get sent to prison. Also, a couple of phrases said by people, not many, but some, feel more modern. At one point, Malcom tells Frances: "Don't be a dick," which is I dunno, for me, is a phrase I don't feel I would hear in a story set in the 50s or 60s. But the actions and settings are all so timeless, perhaps purposefully so. This is a story that has been written so it could take place in pretty much any era.

Someone on awardsdaily forums said filming starts in August and concludes before Thanksgiving. Don't know their source though. Also saying filming will be in Paris, Toronto and Montreal and the Canadian cities will double as NYC and Paris. Sounds a long shoot for an indie film.

Maybe they got the info from Production Weekly?

Just finished French Exit and loved it. What a great piece of writing. It has such a wisdom and humor to it, but also feels really accessible. I can't wait to see what Michelle does with this character since she's such a force of nature. The film won't be to everyone's taste, but oh well...lol
It's a little curious that they're filming this later in the summertime when the bulk of the novel takes place during late December/early January. The Christmas scene between Frances and Malcom is quite memorable in an offbeat touching way.

It sounds like the majority of the film will shoot over autumn as a poster said that filming will conclude before thanksgiving. Maybe why they're leaving it until end of summer to commence filming.
