the scenes where she tells bernie that she is going to stop talking to him or divorce him should be very emotional and also when there two sons die. should be great material for her.

I like what I see and hear in the official trailer. Her accent is spot-on - subtle, not overdone and I like the bewildered, in-denial posture she gives to Ruth. And yes, she brings the rasp on in the prison scene. You really hear just how fed up and undone she is in that scene. On the other hand, the trailer seems to cast her character in a passive light and I am hopeful she has at least one intensely dramatic scene. Hate to say this but DeNiro has made so many bad movies and given so many lazy performances that I have difficulty seeing him as Bernie. He's more DeNiro than Madoff to me in this trailer. Regardless, I am still stoked about the possibilities of this film.

Agreed. It's kind of stunning to see how bad De Niro is these days. Compared to say Raging Bull.

Does HBO always premiere their original movies on Sat nights? that seems strange to me you'd think it would be Sunday instead.. I think a lot of them have been on Saturday evenings, yes. That one with Queen Latifah a couple years ago, the new Oprah movie this weekend is on Saturday.

This isn't great, honestly Actually, the only thing I'm not too crazy bout is the tag line. It isn't "zippy" or "clean" enough. "There is no innocent explanation" woulda been much much better IMO. If I had to choose something else I didn't like, it would be the character names underneath the actors' names. I dunno why, but isn't it obvious by the way they look, that ppl automatically know who they're playing?? Those who wouldn't automatically know have probably never even heard of madoff anyhow

She gonna have such juicy material in this one. On another forum, the editor, who has connections, etc. said heard last week that Pfeiffer's performance is "win-worthy" and "HUGE" and she could be "unstoppable" in the supporting actress awards race. We'll see.

I hope so. The script for The Wizard of Lies was co-written by John Burnham Schwartz, a great novelist whose book Reservation Road received LOTS of praise. He also co-wrote the screenplay to the film version of his book starring Mark Ruffalo and Joaquin Phoenix, which I thought was excellent. I've got some real expectations for the screenplay because of this!

Robert loves Michelle! (i guess he doesnt count Stardust and NYE since they didnt have scenes together) “I love Michelle,” De Niro says. “This is the second time we’ve worked together. We did The Family, and that was a lot of fun, so I was very, very happy that she was playing Ruth.” also "Barry Levinson says Pfeiffer met with the real Ruth Madoff and her understanding of her character, coupled with her and De Niro’s intense connection, made his job easy. “When she finally stepped into that role, they would be talking, and somebody would go, ‘This is Bernie and Ruth,’” Levinson says. “It wasn’t a struggle with these scenes. They found this chemistry and this interaction. It’s one of the times where, as a director, I can just sit back and watch and just let it go.” and "...instead, a devastating character study centered on the fickleness and frailty of the human psyche." www.channelguidemag.com/tv-news/2017/04/27/wizard-of-lies-hbo-robert-de-niro-madoff-scandal/

Wouldn't it be neat if De Niro and Scorsese got a new project going with an actual female role and got Pfeiffer for it? We can dream.

Nice! Another reason to wish I loved in NYC, though. The good news about this is they will put the full video up on their YouTube page afterwards just like with their other events. I wonder if De Niro and Pfeiffer will also do SAG-AFTRA Conversations in late May or early June? Nomination voting begins June 12th. Pfeiffer seems to be in campaign mode this time around.

I still think "There is no innocent explanation" would have been a better tagline lol I feel like most taglines the studios come up with are fucking terrible, lol. On another note, De Niro was presented with an award last night in NY. Streep, Scorsese, Levinson, Sean Penn, Christopher Walken were all there, plus many others. I'm a bit surprised, or rather, disappointed Pfeiffer wasn't there.

The Hollywood Reporter review. www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/wizard-lies-review-1000304Here is what he said about Michelle's performance: "Accentuating Ruth's confusion and an occasionally broad Queens accent, Pfeiffer's performance is like a sad spin on her classic comic turn in Married to the Mob. Here, the actress plays the shell of a woman who has been obliviously shackled to evil for too long. It's too late for Ruth to extricate herself, and she can only express bafflement at being treated by the media as a potential evil genius when she's clearly not."

What I'd like to know is whether he means the performance is sad in terms of quality or is it a sad performance as in it's a tragic character...

sounds like he is saying the character is sad / down. does not sound like he liked her much or maybe i'm reading it wrong
