That’s so random. But nothing they do now surprises me lol
Finally saw the deleted scenes. They were good, but I can see why most of them were cut. The only one I wish had made the final cut was the scene between Frances and Susan in the kitchen late at night.

Well I saw it a few times through awards screeners and review links. But those were emailed to me and watched on my TV through the laptop so it wasn't the most pristine experience. I did go twice to the theater to see it and enjoyed it more visually there. Seeing it on blu-ray for the first time, the transfer was so good and the colors definitely richer. It all felt more alive. As for the movie itself, I still feel it worked and still enjoy it even tho I wish they had shot the talent show scene from the book. But yea, it's still a winner for me!

Is it just me or anyone also feel that the "French Exit" Blu-ray is being badly converted? It's obviously not a standard high definition quality, the color is too bright and the image quality is not as clear/neat as other normal blu-ray, I'm really pissed off by Sony Pictures Classic, they didn't do a good job on the marketing and now they also gave us such a cheap quality final product.

I liked the transfer, but then again I had mostly seen the film via screening links that were sent to me and they didn’t necessarily have the best quality so this was a definite improvement. I will say I was disappointed that they took such little effort with the main title menu on the blu ray. It didn’t seem to have anything special about it

And the thing is, I also got a digital download on my iMac and that version is so much better than the blu-ray, somehow the Blu-ray's brightness/contrast level totally ruined the beautiful cinematography of this movie. I just played the blu-rays of Murder on the Oriented Express and Where is Kyra? to compare and I can clearly see the different.

Hmm, interesting. I’m tempted to get the digital version now and compare. I think nothing beats the transfer for Where is Kyra? though. It was so stunning!

This just needed a more polished script and it would have been aces with far more acclaim and recognition I'm sure. She has the worst luck I tell ya.

Jeez, I really didn’t like it.
I’m like the worst party guest. Arriving late and turning up with a very unpopular opinion.
I thought the film was a mess. The tone and direction just… bland. And as a result, it was, to me, just a series of not very interesting things happening followed by more not very interesting things happening. The humour was lost in translation. I was really surprised by how much time the supporting characters stole later on in the film too.
I thought Michelle was mostly good. It didn’t help that I’ve already seen so many scenes, so many times, before seeing the film. I’d already seen her best bits. I really wish she’d gone with a different approach though. But anyway, I thought the performance, like the accent/voice, was slightly inconsistent at times. Mostly good though. I prefer her to be less artificial.
I’ll stop pissing over it. I’m sure I’ll like it more once I watch it again. I’m just super disappointed right now.

Michelle really has no luck though. Now we'll no doubt see Viola and Gillian get all the acclaim for The First Lady.

No cinemas near me in the UK/Ireland have decided to show the film, so I decided to bite the bullet and order the US Blu-Ray. Indie movies... what a nightmare.

The closest cinema to me wasn’t showing it - and I have an unlimited card there that I haven’t used in 15 months so I was a bit annoyed lol. They still showed it in Bradford though - which was pretty surprising, but I was the only person in the screening. I didn’t drag anyone else along because it was a bit further afield

It does sound like a sad rollout for the UK considering how many theaters this got released in here in the states. Even my podunk two-stop border town back home had it playing for a couple of weeks. This coulda been prime Curzon or Odeon type of fare. Oh, SPC...

Finally. Just watched French Exit. I really need to watch it again. But, first thoughts (sorry for typos etc., writing this really fast): Loved: - The cinematography, music and the general look of the film. Mixed feelings: - Sound - maybe its just me but sometimes I felt it was hard to hear the dialogue... Did anyone else experience that? - The acting. When I first saw the trailers it took me some time to get used to Michelle's take on the character, so I pretty much knew what I was going to see. Acting wise she has brilliant moments in the film, like for example in the restaurant. Absolutely fantastic in that one. And loved her in the scene when she first meets Valerie Mahaffey. There were however some scenes where I felt like she really went over the top, for example a couple of scenes where she laughs really hard (I cringed when I watched the scene where the group meets the clairvoyant lady for the first time and they reach out to small Frank) and the one where she's sharpening her knives. (And if I have to be a bit nasty I don't she why pouts so much . But, overall, I thought she was good in the film and true to character (she actually reminded me so much of a friend of mine that sometimes it felt like I was watchin her instead of Michelle lol). The same can be said for most of the cast, even though the film is mostly a showcase for Michelle. - Editing. The scenes felt too long sometimes. I feel like a bit of editing could have helped. But that's just my opinion. Direction: I feet like it could have been stronger sometimes - emphasizing "sometimes" - because I like the acting, overall. SPOILERS (in case some of you haven't seen the film already). Also mixed feelings: The script. The scenes in the restaurant and the scene where Lucas and Michelle meet Valerie for the first time are well written and memorable (a part from the frozen dildo, what was that all about lol), but the script lacks more memorable scenes in my opinion. It could have been so much better with just three more scenes that are more memorable. However there's something about the film, the tone, the acting, and the character of Francis ... I just can't stop thinking about it. I just wish the script was a bit stronger. It would have made the film so much better in my opinion.

Agree with all of that, especially the script and editing. I think some more time in post would have helped. Or maybe not since they clearly were happy with their finished film lol

I agree that the film could have used a couple of additional scenes, specifically in the third act. The flow of the film changes during that time and it feels like there was something missing before the final kitchen scene. I know I've said it before, but I wished they'd included the talent show scene from the novel.

Great, thoughtful review with many good points.
I think I liked it more than you but you're right about the script needing more work. I had issues with the pacing too. Some scenes dragged while others sparkled. An interesting misfire as a film, but a wonderful showcase for Michelle IMO.

I dunno when this happened, but Michelle won Best Actress in a 3-way tie for French Exit at the CinEuphoria Awards beating out Alana Haim, Carey Mulligan, Kate Winslet, Nicole Kidman, Kristen Stewart and other. Minor award I guess?? But still, it's one she doesn't have so that's neat lol

Believe it or not, I just watched this today for the 1st time. I actually really enjoyed it and thought Michelle was very good. Was quite skeptical after seeing some clips and the trailer but thought she was great as Frances. Loved her and Malcolm's relationship and their scenes together. Also loved the cinematography and the music, they set the tone for the film I thought.
The stuff between Malcolm and Imogen Poots character and her new boyfriend was a bit stupid but loved Frances giving him a slap after punching Malcolm.
This just made me want to see Michelle do more type of these films.

Agreed!! It’s just the kind of film I had been wanting her to do for so long and I’m so glad we have it. Also, I love how you cited the score and the cinematography. In the rush to praise Michelle’s performance, I don’t think those elements got a lot of recognition. My favorite scene, apart from the extended one in Madame Reynard’s living room, is the dishes scene in the kitchen at the end. So beautiful and really does right by these two characters.
French Exit got me through the Maleficent era and I can’t wait to show it to my boyfriend next month as I continue to walk him through her filmography. Next up, however, is mother! 😬
