So I´ve finally had the time to go over the reviews Michelle got in March for French Exit and it warmed my heart to see all the great things critics have been saying about her. I mean she's gotten amazing reviews (apart from a minority of critics that seem to think she overacted in the film). Another thing, I don't recall her ever doing so much publicity work for any film she's worked on. Like ever. Do you guys think it's due to Covid-19 the fact she didn't have show up before a live audience in talk shows? Or do you think she was more certain this time that she'd get a Oscar nomination? Just speculating here

Just speculating here I think it's a combination of COVID-19 where she can do all of her interviews through Zoom, and the fact that she really loved French Exit. I think she did the extra mile to promote the movie because she had a wonderful time making it (ie, she said it's in her top 5 movie experiences). At least she got a Golden Globe nom; all of her efforts did not go to waste. I don't want her to be discouraged to campaign again in the future, so I'm happy she got at least a Globe nom.

Yeah getting that Golden Globe nomination was great. - Now I just really need to see the god damn film lol

The film did her far more good than harm. Artistically, it was a missed opportunity but Michelle's glowing reviews reminded people in the industry that she is a force onscreen. And it didn't waste her like the Antman films or go too far in the obscure / artsy direction like Kyra either. I think it probably helped her land The First Lady role.
I wish the film were stronger but I'm thrilled about her personal success in it. This is what she needed to land great parts going forward.

I would say she was more open to promotion because she didn't have to leave her house and because she loved the film, her director and her co-stars. I think it was a fulfilling creative experience for her. That was more of a factor than the awards potential. I think she wanted to do everything she could to shine a light on the film and her colleagues.

The Globe Nom was what I was banking on right after the NYFF screening. I suspected this wasn't going to be the year for her in terms of Oscars due to just how stacked it was, but I knew she'd be praised and rewarded with the globe nom.

I have to go out of town this weekend, so I can't go and see the movie at all until I get back on Tuesday. I told myself tho that I'd only brave the movie theater again for a Michelle movie. I did Batman Returns at Alamo for Christmas and now French Exit. None of the theaters playing it are arthouse tho, which kinda surprises me. Two of them are actually Cinemark. Eh well, whatever lol

She continues to get rave reviews with critics citing her as the reason to see the film. No matter how flawed the film is, this is a major critical triumph for Pfeiffer.

Yep and the film is almost to green on Metacritic. Imagine if they had just rolled the film out everywhere they could in Feb and had done VOD shortly after. Idiots.

Idiots is definitely the word for them. SPC totally dropped the ball when it came to adjusting to the situation. Interestingly enough, the rollout for this weekend is bigger than I thought. Turns out my little podunk hometown area IS getting French Exit. One theater, but still...it's playing! And my area is sooooooo not the arthouse/indie crowd ha ha

Hope it worked for everyone who tried! It did. I’ve already watched. I liked the movie and loved her in it. It is easily one of her best performances ever. Her nuances, her stares, her lines and the delivery. Everything about it seems fresh and unique. Sorry if I insist, but she did deserve the Globe and the Oscar. I’m still not sure who I’d give it to though, her or Kirby.

I'm looking forward to hearing what more board members have to say after they see the film.

Carey Mulligan got it tho, who was actually my second choice. Alas.

Thank you so much and I finally got to see the movie, and I love it! I actually love the tone of the movie much more than the novel in general, Michelle is good in every single scene, and it's also delightful to see her as the lead. The only question I have is I don't understand why it's nominated for Special Effect by the Canadian Screen Awards.... I have to say I really love the recent choices of Michelle (French Exit, Where is Kyra?, Mother!), but I have a feeling that Michelle will finally win some awards again with projects I'm least interested like The First Lady.

I haven't seen the movie but I'm optimistic, like Jorge Pagaza, and I think that I will enjoy very much this film.
I añways remenber that, many times, Oscars are unfair and boring

A Region 1 locked Blu-Ray, no doubt.
Still no word on a UK release. See, this is why I don't mind Michelle doing the big studio projects. Wide distribution with confirmed release dates.

I know what you mean. There still aren't blu ray releases of a few of her films over here in the US. What Lies Beneath being the most surprising for me.

Right, I saw that too. #10 in the top 10. True, I guess that isn’t bad considering the circumstances and the number of theaters actually showing the movie. VOD option woulda been a help tho, no question. I actually caught it on Friday night. There were 7 ppl in the whole theater. One woman couldn’t stop howling. She was laughing like it was the funniest thing she’d seen in a long time 🤷♂️
