Saw it tonight. The whole thing is as forgettable and unspectacular as they come, tho only slightly better than Huntsman: Winter's War. The movie only comes alive and becomes worth watching when Michelle is on the screen. Her character and her character's journey is worth sitting through everything else. She gives one of her best villainous turns here as she camps it up, but at the same time, also grounds the movie into a reality that's especially dark, for a Disney film. I can she what made her want to take this role and, for what it gives her to do, I'm glad she did. Mainly I'm glad she did cuz we've got French Exit coming next year and this is a good time filler till then that's high-profile enough to keep her out there.

I'm traveling this weekend and won't be able to see it until next week.
Based on the reviews and the upfront press, I think she was smart to accept this film. It's given her a lot of visibility, the role is substantial, and her performance has been warmly received. Wise move, I'd say.
Now on to French Exit with the lead role and hopefully a great script and direction.

So the consensus seems to be... a middle of the road sequel, visually strong, with dynamite performances from Pfeiffer and Jolie.
I agree with michalh, I'm glad she accepted this part as it's kept her profile high. I'm still looking forward to it at the weekend and hope another project is annouced soon.

It's nice to see Michelle in a leading role in a box office Disney hit. From the sounds of it, it sounds like Michelle has a bigger part than Angie. I'm glad Michelle has got plenty of screen time in this unlike Ant Man and the Wasp. Looking forward to French Exit and hopefully Turn of Mind.

It feels like she did have at least as much screen time as Jolie, maybe a smidge more. She’s not off screen for very long throughout the movie. The longest stretch of time she’s off screen is about 10 minutes or so (maybe a little less) during the sequence when Maleficent is discovering the world of the dark fae.

I was just about to ask about screen time! It’s great it’s a decent size role.
Is there many surprises or are her best bits in the trailer?

There are plenty of actual surprises in the movie from her that weren’t in the trailer, especially in the finale. But there are some shots I saw in the trailers/tv spots that didn’t make it into the movie. Hoping for a director’s cut cuz all those moments seemed to have been from trimmed scenes rather than scenes that were taken out altogether. I will also say that I didn’t care for her character’s fate now that I’m thinking about it more. Nah....lol

Is it true or not that jolie and pfeiffer have only one or two scenes together? is it a fake news? 🤔

Now forecasting at only 35m+ opening against a whopping 185m budget. Will be surprised if this even makes 100m domestically as it'll probably have a big drop next weekend. 39% on RT now too. Will make up the budget with it's overseas takings though.

I just got back from seeing the film. It's always a joy to see Michelle up on the big screen... but no doubt this is a flawed film.
Things I liked: - Pfeiffer really had the lead role here and is given the most material to work with (I can see why she said yes). - The visuals and climax were excellent. - Jolie was wonderful once more as Maleficent. - The story was more exciting and engaging than the first movie. - The score was quite effective.
Things I disliked: - The movie had some clear pacing problems. The middle stretch in particular suffers. - Outside of Maleficent and Queen Ingrith, the characters were thinly drawn. - The cinematography was a little too dark/dull in places. - The ending for Queen Ingrith was misjudged (I might be alone in thinking this)
And the biggest sin... Barely giving Pfeiffer and Jolie two scenes together. They were electrifying on screen and the movie could have been doing with ALOT more of them together.
Based on the box office, it appears unlikely that we'll be seeing a 'Maleficent 3'.
Overall, I'm glad she did it and I enjoyed it overall.

I actually liked this? It is fairly boring in the middle, I agree but this is not even close to one of her worst films. Dark Shadows is a million times worse. I thought Pfeiffer was really great and didn't expect her to be THAT evil and brutal, Lol. I had heard a spoiler about the ending before I saw it and immediately thought of Stardust and what do you know, it was true, Lol. I didn't mind her fate and thought it was funny. {SPOILER! CLICK ME IF YOU DARE!}Stardust karma

Saw it last night.
My reaction was pretty much the same as Pfeiffer-Phan's. Overall, it was better than I expected and the best moments by far were the two scenes with Pfeiffer and Jolie, although Michelle was wickedly droll and funny on her own. This character however does not approach the depth of Lamia in Stardust, but I suppose it wasn't meant to.
Agree the film had pacing problems in the mid-section which was dull and the battle royalle at the end went on far too long. I had no problems with Michelle's fate at the end either.
All in all, it was a mostly forgettable but harmless Disney adventure with two goddesses who know how to steal scenes and deliver the glamour.
Mick LaSalle in the SF Chronicle had this to say about Pfeiffer's performance:
"Unfortunately, Philip’s mother, the queen, doesn’t want peace, but rather has a master plan to murder every fairy and woods creature in existence. Fortunately, the queen is played by Michelle Pfeiffer, one of the best and most underrated screen actresses in the English-speaking world, so she doesn’t phone in it with some generalized portrait of evil. She internalizes this hatred, gives it a history, and makes it deep and personal. This makes Pfeiffer as interesting as anyone could hope to be in an otherwise uninteresting role."

I just can't take LaSalle seriously anymore after his terrible Where is Kyra? review. He also thought she should have won an Oscar for Cheri. He has clearly lost it.

I guess even they make the third one Michelle will be out of the picture, as they will need a new enemy to fresh up the story.

I read it will breakeven if it hits $400M but with only $295M now, I wonder if it will make that much by the end of its theatrical run. The rest will have to come from streaming services but I it could eventually become profitable.
This was still a smart move because she got tons of press and favorable reviews for the most part. Nice to see her in a big studio film and playing a major role too.

Deadline has it hitting near $98M domestic this weekend and it will likely cross the $100M mark next week. International numbers for this weekend aren't available yet, but it has already crossed the $400M mark worldwide. Not nearly as huge as the first one, but better than the opening weekend numbers indicated.
