OMG - sounds fantastic. deadline.com/2019/05/annette-bening-michelle-pfeiffer-team-for-feature-adaptation-of-alice-laplantes-turn-of-mind-cannes-1202612446/From Deadline... "Oscar nominees Annette Bening and Michelle Pfeiffer are boarding director Gideon Raff’s thriller Turn of Mind, which is the feature adaptation of the Alice LaPlante New York Times bestseller. Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Wright is adapting the psychological thriller which centers around a retired orthopedic doctor suffering from Alzheimer’s who is trying to figure out – in her moments of clarity – if she killed the person the police claim she had, or if she’s being deceived. Producing are Gail Berman through The Jackal Group, Well Told Entertainment’s Rory Koslow, and Raff. Rocket Science will finance the film and launch international sales at Cannes next week. CAA Media Finance represents the U.S. domestic rights." Has anyone read the book?

“Turn of Mind is an edge of your seat emotional thriller,” Raff said. “A story of a warped friendship between two brilliant, sharp, forceful women who are bonded equally by their love for and jealousy of one other.” variety.com/2019/film/news/cannes-film-festival-annette-bening-michelle-pfeiffer-turn-of-mind-1203211733/"a warped friendship"...love it!! From Amazon: A stunning first novel, both literary and thriller, about a retired orthopedic surgeon with dementia, Turn of Mind has already received worldwide attention. With unmatched patience and a pulsating intensity, Alice LaPlante brings us deep into a brilliant woman’s deteriorating mind, where the impossibility of recognizing reality can be both a blessing and a curse. As the book opens, Dr. Jennifer White’s best friend, Amanda, who lived down the block, has been killed, and four fingers surgically removed from her hand. Dr. White is the prime suspect and she herself doesn’t know whether she did it. Told in White’s own voice, fractured and eloquent, a picture emerges of the surprisingly intimate, complex alliance between these life-long friends—two proud, forceful women who were at times each other’s most formidable adversaries. As the investigation into the murder deepens and White’s relationships with her live-in caretaker and two grown children intensify, a chilling question lingers: is White’s shattered memory preventing her from revealing the truth or helping her to hide it? A startling portrait of a disintegrating mind clinging to bits of reality through anger, frustration, shame, and unspeakable loss, Turn of Mind is a remarkable debut that examines the deception and frailty of memory and how it defines our very existence.

Holy SHIT! I don't even care about the director not having a great filmography, this will be fun! And it sounds like Pfeiffer will play the friend who Bening's character might have murdered? Amazing.

Anybody else getting A Thousand Acres vibe from this set up? A story of two women with a complex bond told from one's point of view? I mean those two stories couldn't sound more different in tone/plot if they tried, but I've always liked how you could never read what was going on with Michelle's character in that one unlike Lange's; made her mysterious and interesting. Hoping it's the same kinda thing here...
Also, having her be the secondary lead means if the film is awards-worthy, she'll be pushed for supporting actress and won't risk hurting her lead actress chances for French Exit if that film is deemed awards-worthy

Reading some reviews, it sounds like it will be the Annette Bening show with a small but important and interesting role for Pfeiffer. That's fine by me, I've wanted her to do another thriller so badly and this sounds really interesting.

Reading reviews too...I'm wondering, based on the director's statement, if the story has been refashioned as more of a tale about the two women and their friendship
Customer review description of Michelle's character: "Amanda appeared to be a virtuous seventy-five year old retired teacher who through the book is revealed to have been a horrid control freak who sought more of the power she craved via manipulation of others' painful secrets."

Wait a second. Amanda is 75 in the book? Maybe Bening is playing Amanda then because she's a little older than Pfeiffer. The lead role is described as being 64. Unless they changed the ages for the adaptation.

I'm sure they've changed the age for the script. I'll bet they've changed a few things

Or maybe they just won't mention their ages at all. The headlines are making it look like they'll be co-leads so the makers will probably want to put them on as equal footing as they can.

Anyone think it's time to hunt down the director/writer/producers on social media and ask that burning question: "Does Michelle Pfeiffer have a lead role in this?"

I just realized, with this and French Exit, this now makes 6 book to film adaptations for her since 2009, unless I'm forgetting one or two? Cheri, The Family, Wizard of Lies, Orient Express and these two new films.

Nope, I think you've got em all!! Maleficent 2 comes from a fairy tale, but it's a sequel, so it's basically its own thing and Ant-Man was a comic book, but not an actual "book" book

The longline plot description on the Imdb page feels as if they're co-leads in a way...tho maybe it's just me lol

Wow. Two film announcements in the space of a week. Sounds like Annette has the main role between the two but Michelle will be co-lead or big supporting role. 2 films by Rocket Science with Michelle at Cannes.

Yea, I'm thinking co-lead/secondary lead...especially with the director calling it "a story of a warped friendship" it makes me think that although it will be told from Bening's point of view, it's mainly about the two of them...
Also, after reading the reviews on Amazon of the character Amanda O'Toole, I think it's safe to say Michelle is the villain of the piece...I mean besides her character's killer lol

Have we ever had 2 film announcements in such quick succession? Great to see Michelle in another thriller. Hope these two films find good distributors. Hopefully they both get made

Really hope Netflix don't take this. The director has just done a film with them starring Chris Evans.

Too soon to tell but the screenplay could definitely expand on the "warped friendship" between the two women to give the murder mystery more punch. With actresses of this caliber, you'd be crazy not to give them some Bette Davis / Joan Crawford showcase moments. Both women are fully capable of making almost any film watchable. They're great actresses who are also great movie stars. Of course, it comes down to the writing and the direction to a large extent. With a tight, intelligent script (based on what sounds like a solid novel), strong direction and a capable supporting cast, it will be great fun to see these two titans square off on screen. Just get out of their way and let the fireworks begin.

Interesting how long it takes to get a film made.
Bening is appearing on Broadway in All My Sons until June 30th. Her IMBD page shows no other films in development or pre-production except Turn Of Mind. So conceivably, she could be availalbe to start filming later this summer. If Michelle's role isn't as large, her part could be filmed right after or right before they start shooting French Exit. Both films are being financed by Rocket Science so the scheduling should be easy to figure out. Different production companies, but the same financial backer.
Bening's co-star on stage is Tracy Letts who will voice the role of the cat / ex-husband in French Exit. The synergy between the two actresses continues.

Fairly large role for Michelle in this I'm assuming given directors description of the film. Bening is definitely the main character but big juicy supporting or co-lead for Michelle. This will hopefully go in to production towards the end of the year.

It seems that Pfeiffer is on a mission to work with just about every other A-lister in Hollwood. What a career.

Delighted that we have another project announced so soon. Boy, Pfeiffer meant it when she said she wanted to work more. Remember those dark days of 2005/2010/2014?
Loved that its a thriller and with Annette Bening.
A little concerned that Pfeiffer seems to have the smaller role. I would hate to see her sitting on the sidelines with Bening getting all the praise.
