It is still weird seeing Michelle on social media after all these years. Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, Sarah Paulson, Dakota Fanning, Kate Bosworth, Rita Wilson have all liked her post on her new film.
Hopefully we'll hear of some good deals for this during Cannes. Rocket Science were behind Guy Ritchie's The Gentleman at last year festival which was picked up by Miramax for $30m. They are also behind Aaron Sorkin's latest with Eddie Redmayne. Fox Searchlight or Sony Pictures Classics would be awesome for this. A24 would also be awesome.

Haven't read the book and don't intend to. I'm always disappointed when I see a film adaptation of a book I like. But I am very happy it appears to be happening soon. Surrealistic comedy - not easy to pull off - but her character sounds fascinating, the story sounds interesting, Hedges is talented, Letts is no fool and - best of all - Michelle is the lead! Hoping this will be more on edgy side, less on the whimsy with many wonderful moments for her to play. I’m the opposite. I can’t wait to get my hands on this book mainly cuz everyone I’ve asked about this writer has told me that he’s amazing and so funny. If the film isn’t a literal translation, I’ll be ok. It’s typically more fun for me when things are changed, given how stories play out differently on different mediums. Plus straight adaptations feel like deja vu to me; like, “I’ve seen this already.” That’s probably why I like Stardust so much, cuz of the differences it feels like an alternate version in a “parallel lives” kinda way...but we’ll see! The fact that the author is the screenwriter makes me happy tho Tone-wise, some whimsy would be nice, but I’m hoping more for some magical realism and absurdist comedy with moments of revelation and slight catharsis. Is that a lot to ask?? 😂 You make a great point about readers not imposing their vision onto filmmakers. Gonna give that some serious thought. It really is about capturing the theme, the tone, and the essence of what the writer was trying to say. In this case, the author wrote the screenplay so that bodes well. And you're probably spot on about the tone being more absurdist, given what the synopsis says.

With this news, her Star Meter ranking on IMDB is at 45. Highest she's been in a while.

It will be because of her birthday last week. Always go much higher the week after your birthday is on the front page of IMDB.

Rocket Science have a busy Cannes slate. This is from the press release of the new Cliffhanger film they also have.
Rocket Science’s slate at Cannes includes Azazel Jacobs’ “French Exit” starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Lucas Hedges and Tracy Letts, Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” set to star Eddie Redmayne, Sacha Baron Cohen and Seth Rogen, Gary Shore’s “Queen Mary,” and Jonathan Jakubowicz’s “Resistance” starring Jesse Eisenberg, which is currently in post-production.

I hope we hear news about distribution at Cannes and don't have another drawn out wait like Where is Kyra? I don't think I could handle that again.

True...first step is ensuring the movie is actually made...once it is, then I know I'll feel better...
My copy of the book came in yesterday. I wanna tear into it, but I've got loads of other stuff to read first. I got the same edition that Michelle posted ha ha

hello guys i asked the director on his instagram post when they start shooting he replied to me "soon" I wonder if they had already started scouting filming locations or if they were waiting for financing to get wrapped up first? I imagine most if not all of it will be filmed on location on NYC and Paris and not on a soundstage. Also, they have to get stuff like costumes/costume designer sorted out. I wonder how long they usually takes?

I wonder how long they usually takes? Given that Azazel Jacobs said on Instagram that filming is "soon" and Michelle has pretty much confirmed it's a go I think we can take this is going ahead. It does look like Jacobs collaborates frequently with the same crew so I imagine most of the crew will already be in place. Given the cast and Rocket Science and Wild Bunch involvement who have done some good deals before I'm more quietly confident this will find a good home. I can see A24 taking this actually as they have collaborated with Jacobs before and have also been behind a lot of Lucas Hedges films. I'll be really disappointed though if Cannes finishes and we've heard nothing about this being picked up.

Sounds like funding is in place so they should be in pre-production soon., if not already. I like what I see on the Rocket Science docket. Assuming the money is there, they could be filming over the summer. Really hope a savvy distributor with deep pockets picks it up. It's the kind of offbeat film I wish they made more often. I agree w/ Angelica Huston - spare me another formulaic film about aging cheerleaders (or old codgers) having a last hurrah. It's another cynical attempt by studios to lure busloads of senior citizens into early bird matinees. I get why they do that - there is a sizable and overlooked market for those films. Clearly, Marvel doesn't give a damn about the baby boomer generation. I just hope I never see Michelle in a film like Poms, Going In Style or Grumpy Old Men - Part Three, Four, whatever.

Oh my god haha that Anjelica Huston interview was so crazy ha but yea remember just a few years ago it was like Mich was destined to be in shit like the Family for the rest of her career I def didnt see this resurgence comin', like seriously this new phase of her career is so awesome

She coulda so easily begun that route had Whatever Makes You Happy panned out...so glad it didn’t. Her recent body of work and especially this project shows how she is still a viable artist that cannot be dismissed or written off

Be interesting to see who else is cast in this. They have a bashful private investigator, an aimless psychic proposing a seance, a doctor who makes house calls with his wine merchant in tow, and the inimitable Mme. Reynard, aggressive houseguest and dementedly friendly American expat. Looking forward to seeing who is cast as Mme Reynard and the private investigator.

Right?! What an eclectic cast of characters! This is sounding so great; I really am curious to see how much of an American/European blend this film has...I love when such tones are mixed in movies!!
Does anyone else hope that this gets shot this summer and frees up some time for her to shoot something else this fall...or is it just me?? Heh heh heh

And as far as I'm concerned, I'll be happy no matter what kind of project she chooses next. French Exit is just the kind of film I really wanted her to do following her latest run. It's a lead role which gives her some fresh territory that can challenge her and lets us see her in yet another different light So whether she does something afterwards that's mid-level budget like mother! or Wizard of Lies, or something big-budget like Orient Express or Maleficent, or stays in the vein of French Exit, I'll be totally fine lol

Pleased to see both films now listed on her IMDB page.
Loving how polar opposite these two films are. One is a surrealist, offbeat comedy with serious undertones and the other is a psychological thriller / murder mystery.
Happy days are here again!

This won't happen because it's getting too late, but it would be great if they could hurry up and film this and have it finished in time for this awards season, because it's looking like a VERY weak year in terms of actress contenders and if any good, she could have a good shot. Just dreaming.
