Ha ha no...we've got one annual meeting. We submit our initial votes in late December n then our final ones in early January. Votes are submitted electronically. There's no campaigning amongst us lol Saw Downsizing tonight. What. A. Dog. First half of the movie was unspectacular given how creative the concept was, but still showed promise. Unfortunately it goes off the rails in the second half, trying to be environmentally conscious and poetic and depressing and funny all at the same time. It just gets awkward and bad the deeper it goes and the more it tries. I CANNOT believe the studio is hedging their bets on this turd of a film. Very interesting reaction to Downsizing. It’s surprising that Paramount is campaigning so hard for it and shocking to learn that Alexander Payne has failed after directing the likes of Nebraska and The Descendants. Nebraska was one of my personal favorites in recent years. Now Paramount is pissing me off even more by pushing J-Law with no apparent interest in doing the same for Pfeiffer. Interesting how the recent J-Law / Aronofsky split is being leveraged to promote her chances in the Oscar derby. In addition to the Hollywood Reporter round table, she’s done a Variety Studio: Actors On Actors w/ Adam Sandler where she talks about how the reviews affected their relationship. Pretty desperate if you ask me. I don’t think she has a chance in hell of being nominated and I say this without any disrespect for her as an actress. I think she’s brilliant. Right now, it seems like Janney, Metcalfe, Blige are the Supporting Actress front runners with Blige fiercely campaigning her way to a nomination. Unless Paramount or Pfeiffer’s management team step up, I suspect her excellent performance in mother! will be overlooked. I have a feeling though that if J-Law gets nominated, she will carry Pfeiffer with her. I could not imagine J-Law emerging from that movie as the sole major nominee. But I could see a scenario where Pfeiffer is nominated but not J-Law. For me, Janney and Metcalfe are the only true locks in that category. Mudbound underperformed in the NBR and it's a Netflix flick. People might be overestimating the ability of Netflix to break through the Oscar race.

Blige is nothing special at all. I really don't get the buzz for her. I agree Janney and Metcalf are locks and I think Chau will probably get nominated, the last 1 or two spots are ripe for surprises.

Let's hope the Screen Actors Guild does the same since they don't have a Supporting Actress category for TV. And I wish they could have fit Pfeiffer in the Supporting Actress film category for 'mother!'. They have 8 nominees in the Lead category, Lol. The Satellite's are so corny.

I still haven't gotten my Lady Bird screener, but I've got the ones for I, Tonya and Shape of Water so I'll see what she's up against soon. I still don't think there is enough acceptance on behalf of the Academy of Netflix as a credible studio of theatrical features to carry Blige all the way to the Oscars. I DO see Chau making it all the way there tho. Her role is great and the only thing worth citing positively about the film. The role has such a strength and dignity to it; the character has been victimized n yet she's not a victim. The way Chau plays it breaks my heart...she is so poetic and stunning throughout it all, making u believe and feel everything she says and does. I want Michelle up there in the final five not only cuz I love her but cuz she deserves to be up there, no question whatsoever. But after last night, I don't blame the studio for pushing Chau...n I don't envy the choice they had to make.

It does make more sense for them to push Downsizing, yes, more accessible film and it's Alexander Payne. You didn't think Chau's character came off as troublesome/racist?

It's more accessible, but also worse...far far worse in terms of plotting, tone and dialogue. What makes things worse it that it's meanings are so bland and base. It's the most unoriginal film to come from an otherwise wholly original concept.
In terms of the character being racist, my coworker r still discussing this since he considers the part as indeed racist. For me, I know a Vietnamese woman whose accent n manner of speaking IS the same as Chau's in the film so for me, it was easy n normal for me to accept the way she expressed herself since its the same way my friend does. I mean if English isn't someone's first language, that cannot be helped. In Chau's case, her character is a political prisoner born and raised in Vietnam who survived a near-death experience. In terms of speech and mannerisms, I don't know how else to have credibly written her given that character's background and social experience. BUT she avoids being a stereotype by being the only character given an intricate and detailed past as well as a series of events which have shaped her n her ideology. Because of this, she actually becomes the ONLY person in the film who ISN'T a stereotype.

I was holding out some small, delusional hope that the New York critics might throw Pfeiffer a bone and name her their winner today, but they went with Tiffany Haddish instead. Maybe the Critics Choice Awards will nominate her? I think Nathaniel R is a member, he better be campaigning for her.

I know...that was such a random pick...if there is one high-profile group who will award Michelle the prize, then she might have a shot cuz of the spotlight it gives her

I didn't think she was that funny, but man, her reviews were incredible. I will root for her because she has a tremendous life story and she is so fun.

These 16 Women Are Vying For Best Supporting Actress In The 2018 Oscar Race #16 - Michelle Pfeiffer, “mother!” www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/best-supporting-actress-oscar-predictions-2018_us_5a20173be4b0392a4ebbb9f1Say what you will about “mother!,” but it’s almost inarguable that Michelle Pfeiffer is its highlight. After taken a four-year hiatus, Pfeiffer has enough of a comeback narrative going right now that she can remain a factor in this contest despite the movie not becoming the box-office bonanza that Paramount hoped for. The three-time nominee tears through “mother!” with a vengeance, practically daring us to question her power as an actress.

Mich is higher than 16 in my opinion..much higher. Remember how the golden globes used to love Mich? Maybe they will embrace her again starting this year like maybe it will be opposite of what happened with WhiteOleander we all expected her to get nominations everywhere but she was snubbed except for the SAGs so this time maybe the Golden globes will give her a surprise nomination when we dont expect one! I agree, she is much higher than 16. I can't see how Bria Vinaite, Lesley Manville, Lois Smith, Melissa Leo, Kristin Scott Thomas etc. are ahead of her. People are really underestimating her chances. I do think that she needs to get at least one of the precursors (Globe, Sag, Critics Choice, or any of the major critics groups) to remain in the conversation. If she fails to get any of those, I would be more inclined to give up on her Oscar chances. But as of this moment, I still think she can do it.

I agree with both of you, Pfeiffer seems higher in the race, and I also agree she needs a big precursor win and she needs it very soon or it's most likely over for her, especially with Manville and Haddish now getting tons more buzz. Hell, even a second-place/runner-up mention would do wonders for her.

Nope, no sign of it. But it could be on its way...not all of the studios r sending all their titles at once. I'm still waiting on The Disaster Artist n Lady Bird to show up even tho all the other A24 titles have showed Thats the actual DVD blu-ray I'm supposed to review...if they actually send it to me!! They always send press releases w the discs

Oh, and Paramount sent the 'mother!' FYC screeners to the Screen Actors Guild last week.

It really must be personal or something. He had her on his list before, but there is NO reaon to have Julianne Moore and a few others as "Long Shots" but not have Pfeiffer listed at all. That's just dumb.

LOL Yea, I know...bottom line is that everyone in the movie is pretty much a loser, pathetic, reprehensible n not that interesting. There's not enough substance, pathos or story in here to warrant entire movie, let alone one aiming for Oscars. Popped in The Shape of Water afterwards tho n fell in love...a real treasure of a movie!! Wonder Wheel next, then a break and then Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool. Then maybe a nap lol
