"Presumably, Paramount feels the movie is not an awards contender and perhaps more of a straight genre play." Would someone tell me what this means..... Sounds like the writer is suggesting that the studio feels the film may be too conventional for awards...total BS IMO since there's nothing bout Aronofsky or his work that is conventional

Thank you! I was having difficulty making sense of that when I thought about Black Swan, The Fountain and Requiem For A Dream - not to mention what little we know about mother!
And it looks like Paramount is pining their hopes on Suburbicon and Downsizing in the Oscar sweepstakes.

Wait, NO VENICE FILM FESTIVAL for this? Okay, if I wasn't worried before, I am now. Aronofsky is loved by Venice and could get in for filming a reading of a phone book. He has two Golden Lion awards from Venice. So was he rejected because the movie is that bad? Paramount does have two other films going to Venice this year it looks like so maybe they just didn't want a third from the same studio? Maybe he just chose to go to another festival instead this time around? That doesn't seem likely.
As for that teaser posted above, I kind of like it, very mysterious. I hope we get the full teaser or a full trailer very soon. If this turns out to be bad at least it won't be Pfeiffer's fault. And I'll still be glad she did this, she would have been crazy to turn down an Aronofsky project, no matter what.

Why don't we just sit back and enjoy it when it comes. I'm with you Bond! What's with this awards obsession and al this strategic release dates! Sure it's nice if she would win an award but I'm just ecxited that she is making movies again! I don't care about release dates. If a movie is good than in my opinion it doesn't matter when or against what other movie it is released. Word of mouth is the most powerful marketing for a movie. Also all these trailers that come out, it is just too much. Far too long and they give away too much. Why not only teaser trailers that barely last a minute. That's far more exciting and builts up the tension to go see a movie. These days it's all overkill. I mostly don't watch trailers and I try not to read the storyline of the movie. Far more surprising, enjoyable and rewarding. You should try it sometime!

No mention of Gleeson or Wiig makes me feel that they're roles aren't that big. I don't mind Michelle being after Ed, but I would prefer an "and" with her name.
But yea this a teaser that so totally lives up to the word. It's pure teasing through and through. I don't mind so much, mainly cuz the small teaser as is, DOES intrigue me. Buuuuuuuut, I think a full length trailer by the beginning of August needs to happen. Sooner would be better, but NO LATER
Also, listening to the dialogue in the trailer, specifically Bardem saying: "They're here for me," or whatever he says, makes me believe that detailed plot description we read earlier this week, where he was described as being the leader of some cult type group. If that's true, then I guess there's a chance that Michelle IS playing the character described in that synopsis.

Let's not start arguing and fighting with each other. Everybody has a different opinion. No one is wrong, no one needs to apologize for anything. I want everyone to feel welcome here and free to post their thoughts. In fact, I wish more people would start posting and engaging rather than just lurking. I don't want anyone to feel unwelcome here.

I often feel strongly about something but sometimes a different point of view will make me consider something I overlooked and rethink my initial reaction. I don't always change my mind, but I often learn more from people who don't agree me than those who do. I get worked up about a film like mother! because I see it as a major opportunity for Michelle to work with a director I respect and a top tier cast. I want the film to do well because it will be good for her career. I want to see her land great film roles in the future. It will be interesting to see how we all feel about the movie after it comes out. Could be a wild ride.

OMG...lying here in bed, couldn't sleep n I just had a revelation...what has happened concerning Mother! over the last week??
1. Leaked plot description concerning Bardem leading a cult, Lawrence being part of a sacrifice n Michelle portraying a Donald Trump-like character 2. A teaser (emphasis on the word TEASER) that is so frustratingly sparse and totally secretive, yet has dialogue from Bardem suggesting the plot could be accurate. 3. Rapid and unexpected release date switch to September 15. 4. Reportedly no appearance at Venice
Did none of us notice what other piece of entertainment news dropped yesterday??
Ryan Murphy unveiled the first teaser for the new season of American Horror Story entitled: CULT. This follows months of rumors that the seventh season (seventh, right??) would be inspired by the Trump administration. And the season premiere date?? SEPTEMBER 5th!!!!!!!!!!
My guess?? The director n the studio got wind of this and September 15th is the earliest Aronofsky can beat Murphy to the punch w his cult-themed project while still having SOME time to do SOME marketing. Bear in mind, that detailed plot description for the film which dropped last weekend wasn't an official release. No one is supposed to know bout it. Keeping the film's plot a secret for as long as possible is probably what the director n the studio r hoping for so as to avoid as many early comparisons to Murphy's AHS Cult as they can.
How do they accomplish this? By crafting a mysterious teaser which would only make sense to those who read the detailed plot description, avoiding a high-profile festival such as Venice where the film would surely be reviewed and it's plot revealed, and moving the release date as far up as possible to AHS's so that it has SOMETHING of a chance of standing out on its own before audiences fully decide to either embrace or dismiss AHS n cult storylines in general (the movie will premiere three days after the second episode airs.)
If this is true, I'm all for the release date switch-up. I don't want this to follow AHS a month after the show premieres. While The Family had its problems as a film, I always thought the fact that it followed the more popular, yet far worse We're the Millers, which was released the month before n had a the similar theme of a "family" hiding from bad guys, didn't help matters at all. There's NO part of me that wants to see that happening again.
What do u guys think??

AHS S7 is based on the 2016 Presidential election and the title is Cult, so there could be some overlap thematically. The difference could be more in style with AHS being more literal and mother! being more allegorical or symbolic - no idea - but - AHS will broadcast at least two episodes before mother! is released. If the themes are similar, comparisons are going to be made. Murphy is on a critical roll now with Feud, the OJ Simpson docu-drama, etc. so this could be another challenge that Aronofsky is facing with the mother! release. I don't know but your theory could be accurate.
I'd feel better if it were announced for TIFF though. Guess we'll know in a few days.

It's still somewhat popular but not nearly as popular as it once was. A lot of people don't watch it anymore. Who knows what's really going on.

Eii, I'm more optimistic and I think we will be pleased with all these bunch of movies she has done.
Especially, Where is Kyra and the misterious Mother (I can see Mother at Toronto Film Festival). Maybe the change of the date is for that reason, the reason is Toronto...
I see webs about Oscars and they put Michelle between the first 5 contenders to the best supporting actress. But remenber that Oscars are very unfair.
We can be happy because she is considered like a tresaure and she begn in the 70's 80's. Many other stars of theis generation has dissapeared. But not her, nor Sissy Spacek, Sarandon, Streep, Benning, etc. She is in the first league, as Judi Dench, with her adult, adult age.
Someone say American Beauty and my head did a click, I don't know the reason. But I think Mother is a thriller that talks about the human being.
I think, I'll enjoy Mother

It would be great of course if she would and she has won a lot of awards in the past or was nominated. And in these days the competition is getting bigger and bigger and she's still recognitioned in Hollywood! Proof of that came today now that she's cast in The Ant Man, how great is that!

I apologize for my English. I from my humble opinion believe that "all" we have been very unfair with this film. We in our head have invented thousands of possibilities without really knowing anything ... And I think we have not given a chance to the "real" movie. not really know anything about it .... the black swan in his argument was not much "a dancer with emotional disorder that wants to be the star." And the end result was spectacular. Let's hope...

Esperemos...

Still trying to wrap my head around "innovative ways" to take this to a festival.....surprise screening, perhaps? But what would be the point of that?

It's kinda binary, isn't it? You either show the film or you don't. I doubt any major film festival would let him show selected scenes or outtakes with a panel discussion. And why would he do that in the first place if he loves the film?
The real reason this is not going the festival route could be secrecy, as Babyface speculated.
I just hope they don't place an embargo on critical reviews until opening day. That would not be a good sign.
Still baffled.
