I wonder if the Weinsteins pulling Mary Magdalane out of the Oscar race will inspire whoever is distributing Kyra to get it out earlier since there will now be one less highly-touted lead female performance out there this season. Probably not LOL
In any case, The Weinstein Company now only has The Current War as their sole Oscar hopeful this year...

True fall from grace. If you haven't seen the Tulip Fever mess, I suggest reading up on it. There was an article about the messy release troubles for that film recently on Vulture. He has tested the film so many times since like, 2014 or '15. Keeps changing release dates. Pulled it from a screening at WGA (I think) the other night. It's hilarious.

I had heard about that...now he's finally dumping it in a late summer limited release slot...so so sad considering it's him

On it's IMDB page under release dates they now list 2018 (limited). Not sure if the producers added that or some random person.
I was just thinking, it would reallllly suck if this couldn't go to "Tiff" because they couldn't get Pfeiffer to be there for the premiere due to scheduling and that's why the producers had to go with a smaller distributor rather than see if a bigger fish bit in Toronto.

Never posted here before but do read now and then. Took a short walk to my local art house cinema today to ask if they would please show this new indie movie that came out recently. I asked the guy helping me if he heard anything about this Where Is Kyra movie. He said they have been tracking it for a while cause they want to show it when it releases but he heard nothing about a date yet but he said i'm not the only person to ask about it. He said quite a few people have asked

This is an Academy award level performance from everything I've read thus far. I think the depressing subject matter and the fact that it's a slow and difficult film to watch scared away potential buyers. Yet with Kyra and what I know about mother!, Pfeiffer is making some bold choices which should help her find challenging material in the future.

If this was centered around an older man instead of a woman, would it have a hard time being picked up? Hmm. Probably not. Anyway, I have now heard that Oscilloscope will NOT be the distributor for this film, which is a surprise to me. Interested to see who bought it.

I apologize for bumping this with no news, but something is really bugging me. Annette Bening's new film 'Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool', which was picked up by Sony Classics in hopes to get her an Oscar, and which had tons of buzz after the press release, where they praised Bening's performance like it was the best ever, just screened in Telluride last night. It's not getting great reviews, most decent, one bad one, and Bening isn't even getting RAVES. So this seems like another failed Oscar-bait attempt. Compare its reviews to that of 'Where is Kyra?' and explain to me how 'Film Stars' warranted a big purchase by Sony Classics, but Pfeiffer and 'Where is Kyra?' didn't. Pfeiffer got flat-out raves and the film overall got very solid reviews and sounds like a much higher-quality film.
I'll take a film that's a "tough sit" over a lame sounding biopic any day.
I just don't get it.

I've been seeing those same reactions for Bening's film and I don't get it either.
The way I see it, there r 4 main categories for roles that Michelle is eligible for these days:
1. Lead (i.e. Cheri) 2. Female Lead/Secondary Lead (i.e. The Family) 3. Supporting Role--when she's clearly supporting a film where someone else is the star (i.e. People Like Us) 4. Ensemble Part (i.e. New Year's Eve)
It really does suck that in the last couple of years, she's had each of those 4 kinds of opportunities come her way, and the only one which has had the hardest time seeing the light of day is the first...even tho it is the hardest sell out of the 4 projects

I'll take a film that's a "tough sit" over a lame sounding biopic any day. I think you hit the nail on the head here. 'Where is Kyra?' seems like an incredibly bleak film, with somewhat oppresive cinematography and a story that doesn't seem overly appealing or universal. To get that Oscar, Pfeiffer will need to accept one of two roles (regardless of the quality of the overall film) - A character afflicted with an ailment of some kind or a biopic, ideally from a historical or hollywood perspective (think of her playing Gloria Swanson or something).

Like Pfeiffer, Bening has a strong base of supporters who believe she's overdue for an Oscar and they very much want her to win one. She is as close to Hollywood royalty as it gets - married to Warren Beatty and serving on the Academy Board of Governors. She also does theater from time to time and she sits on one film festival jury after another. The industry is dying to see her walk up to that podium and go all Shirley MacLaine over everybody she's ever met. So even with a so-so film and an obvious Oscar bait performance, she stands an excellent chance of winning this year, unless Emma Stone or Sally Hawkins slam dunk her.
It is maddening though that Kyra has been overlooked by distributors. Yes, it's bleak, opaque and slower than Donald Trump's tax returns, but fighting poverty in old age is happening to someone we encounter every day - we just don't know it. In addition to Pfeiffer's brave performance, it deserves to be seen by the public and given a fair shot at some Oscar love.

Could this film maybe end up premiering at the Berlin Film Festival in Feb?

Michelle just needs to continue attaching herself to commercial hits like ant-man and I think it would get all her lead roles backed more.

I'm not giving up on this film. Even if it only gets a digital release, it is a reminder of what she can do with good material and it proves that she isn't afraid to accept a challenging, unglamorous role.
Maybe after Ant Man, another great indie opportunity will come her way.

Turkey Film Festival? Interesting. I hope they are planning on doing more festivals in the United States, too. But if they have a distribution deal already in place, they might not feel the need.

Here is someone who saw the film in Turkey: I just don't understand why, if they have a distribution deal with someone, they don't announce it already.

So they take "I, Tonya" to TIFF and a little boutique distributor named Neon buys the rights and gives it a prime awards season release date of early Dec. in New York and LA to qualify for the Oscars. Now, why can't something this happen to Kyra?

Now, why can't something this happen to Kyra? Too dreary and small, also a stacked year are the likely reasons, but I'd love them to just try it at least. And Sony Pictures Classics just bought Glenn Close's film 'The Wife' for a 2018 release. It got really good reviews overall and raves for Close. I just don't get them NOT announcing a deal, since it appears they have one for 'Where is Kyra?'. What is taking so long? Announce the deal and build whatever buzz you can for it. Quarter 1 of 2018 is right around the damn corner!

And now Bleecker Street has picked up the Rachel McAdams / Rachel Weisz drama Disobedience. Many strong female performances at TIFF this year - again, I say - even with the bleak subject matter, slow pacing, and dark cinematography - Pfeiffer could have been a Best Actress contender with a decent distribution deal.
A Huge Miss IMO.

Hopefully we get news soon and they start promoting it, or maybe they have changed their minds and will release it later next year and not in January? Here is another person who saw it in Turkey and liked it:

This is a tweet from the critic who reviewed it for SreenDaily. They want to see this film do well. No question, whenever this is released, the major critics will be on her side, as they usually are. If by some miracle they change their minds and release it in fall 2018 instead of January, I bet she would get some critics awards.

With Harvey raving about mother!, can't he pick this up? I know he's a mess at the moment but he's done pretty well with Lion and Wind River.
