If you look at what Dosunmu is wearing in the pic, it's the same outfit as a previous picture they posted when they announced it wrapped. Same gas station, too. And same big guy in same light blue shirt. Looks like it's just a throwback picture. http://instagram.com/p/BF7ba-MjVyS

The Best Actress category is still wide open and Michelle's performance is the only thing that can save this from digital release.
There was a time when certain film critics had influence. People like Pauline Kael, Richard Schickel or Roger Ebert would catch a great performance, champion it, and the studios would pay attention. Now I guess it's up to the producers to sell it to a distributor that is still looking and has enough cash.
It will really upset me if this pops-up on Amazon or Netflix w/out a theatrical release.

I think if Amazon bought it, it'd be a good thing, at least better than Netflix, who still can't figure out how to properly buy and handle/market/release films. Amazon is much smarter.

Agree - but I want a theatrical release to insure her eligibility for the Academy Awards.
Hate to sound so awards conscious but I want to see her name up there - where it belongs. Enough already with Streep, Moore, Bening....
Am I partial? Hell yes.

Enough already with Streep, Moore, Bening.... Am I partial? Hell yes. That would be a dream, I just think this one is too cold and inaccessible. Tuesday the 25th is the first round of TIFF announcements. I am holding out hope this shows up there, as well as mother!.

Tomorrow, Toronto announces it's first set of films for their festival lineup this year. Hope to see mother! and Kyra, but I'm not holding my breath for Kyra. I also just saw that they will be making announcements all the way up to August 22, which is just ridiculous, so we may not know if Kyra will be there or not for sure for another month, Lol. So annoying.
Also, critics continue to give Kyra and Pfeiffer a lot of love for her performance on Twitter:
Tomris LafflyVerified account @tomilaffly
Tomris Laffly Retweeted Bilge Ebiri Wondering the same. They'd better. Harrowing film, essential for our times. And an impeccable performance by Pfeiffer.Tomris Laffly added,
Bilge EbiriVerified account @bilgeebiri So all these folks super-excited about a new Michelle Pfeiffer movie are gonna line up when WHERE IS KYRA? opens, right? Right?

No KYRA today for Toronto but they always add more to the Special Presentations in August like last year they added Christine in August and that played Sundance like KYRA did. Praying they add KYRA. Quite a few actresses with films in the Toronto lineup today that are going to be searching for distribution come festival time. Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Rachel Weisz just to name a few. And of course add those to the women whose films already have distribution. Streep, Dench, Claire Foy, and good God Kate Winslet....again. It's just a tough, uphill battle for Pfeiffer and Where is Kyra? Netflix, The Orchard, Weinstein look like the only ones who need a Best Actress contender now. Weinstein is a mess and does not have much money, but we know he's a Pfan. I wish he would step up.

Sony Pictures Classics are in negotiations to acquire Annette Bening's new film. Not sure what is gonna happen with this film

Son of a bitch, but I get it. She's Bening and she's playing a real person, an actress who had a crazy, sad life in the end. If only Where is Kyra? were just a bit more accessible...Pfeiffer would be a force this year.

True, there are a number of films vying for distribution at Toronto with what appear to be strong female lead performances, but I don't see any film that addresses the poverty crisis or how easy it is for older people to fall through the economic cracks and never recover. Even if the film is inaccessible, slow and difficult to watch, it doesn't pull any punches, nor does Pfeiffer in what sounds like one of her bravest performances.
We are living at a very difficult time in the USA with the threat of deep funding cuts and the denial of rights a nightly ritual on Twitter.
Kyra needs to be seen and her performance should get the attention it deserves.

So which studios r left?? Let's have a comprehensive checklist... Well, I mean even the ones who already have one or more Actress vehicles could pick it up, but the ones in need are Weinstein, The Orchard, Netflix (I think?), not really sure there's more than that. Annapurna is actually just starting to distribute films as well so I guess that's a possibility. This film isn't a crowd-pleaser, so that's probably the one thing keeping Weinstein and others from making a move for it.

I'm still holding out for Amazon to take this with a distributor. Killer Films and Big Indie Pictures have had good deals through them before.

I'm still holding out for Amazon to take this with a distributor. Killer Films and Big Indie Pictures have had good deals through them before. I'm not sure they'd do it. They have Woody Allen's new movie and apparently Kate Winslet gives the BEST PERFORMANCE OF ALL TIME and NO ONE ELSE CAN ACT LIKE SHE CAN! so she'll be their #1 push. Why the hell can't Allen or Tarantino write a role like this for Pfeiffer?

LOL! I like Kate but yes she is overrated. Girl is thirsty for awards Same thing happens with Streep, Moore and Blanchett. They´re good, but so overrated. I´m tired of them getting noms / buzz every year. That is why Michelle will always be the best in my eyes, such an authentic and wonderful actress.

I've never understood why some are granted lifetime passes to the hall of gratuitous praise. And it isn't the critics as much as it is the industry and their peers, who seem to vote by name recognition more than performance. I have loved a number of Streep, Moore and Blanchett performances but I haven't found them to be infallible.

The Toronto Film Festival will announce the final round of Galas and Special Screenings, as well as other sections on August 15th, so that's the last hope for this showing up there. I suppose it could still go to Hampton's or San Sebastian, but Toronto would give it more exposure. I also read Toronto is accepting like 60 less films this year, so that doesn't help its chances either.
On another note, it appears that the producers or someone else had that new poster taken off IMDB, so maybe it was not real/official?

Pathetic when a movie with Diane Kruger gets bought and will get a Oscar campaign but Mich's movie can't...yet. Diane won best actress at Cannes but it got shit reviews for the movie. Dunno what these studios are smoking #JusticeforKyra I saw that, too. But it's going nowhere near the Oscars. EW has their fall movie preview out already and it's too bad this film doesn't have a studio or release date so it could be included. It needs exposure, badly.

Well, now they say there are more announcements on the 22nd, Lol. But it looks like maybe it's just for their Discovery section, which this film wouldn't be in anyway. It's lame they chose another crappy looking Jessica Chastain film which doesn't need distribution, but not Where is Kyra? which has gotten really solid reviews, is a timely story with an almost all minority crew and is in need of exposure and a studio.
I'm thinking this film will just eventually be purchased by Oscilloscope Films, which distributed Dosunmu's Mother of George and We Need To Talk About Kevin with Tilda Swinton.

Oscilloscope wouldn't be the worst thing...if Dosunmu has a past relationship w them, it could also be a strong possibility. They also did a decent job with Swinton's film, getting it out there and she even got some pretty good awards traction from it (Golden Globe, SAG and Bafta noms)...woulda probably gotten an Oscar nom, but that was the year Rooney Mara swooped n took the remaining spot most ppl were thinking would be taken by either Swinton, Theron or Dunst.

Yeah, they wouldn't be the worst option. They've done mostly tiny films, most of which people have never heard of, but also Wendy and Lucy with Michelle Willams and a few others. I will say it's also possible TIFF wanted Where is Kyra? but heard that Pfeiffer would not be able to attend, so they didn't accept it. They have strict rules about that, the films main star has to be there or they won't bother letting the film in the festival.

Guys Littleminx now says WIK will be on the big screen 'n they had a call Monday but is likely a first quarter release, that means next year, January to March?? I guess this is better than nothing but wish it was a fall release for Mich Yea, better than nothing I guess. Wonder if there's a chance whoever is releasing this will do the whole low-key limited release qualifying run for awards consideration thing in Nov or Dec before releasing it wider later on like in Jan or Feb
