The premiere for Maleficent is dated for 30th September so Michelle should be finished with press duties before October.
No mention of Tracy Letts in any of the new press releases. Possibly could be as he's only doing voicework. Not heard of Screen Siren Pictures before but Blinder Films were behind the critically acclaimed comedy Love and Friendship with Kate Beckinsale.

I know I said this is great news, and it is because SPC is wonderful, but I think we shouldn't get our hopes up too much just yet. They have had quite a few flops, too. We've been disappointed before. I thought Cheri was going to be a slam dunk with Frears and Miramax.....Lol. Cautiously optimistic, though.

Yeah, going to try and not get too excited. I was the same with Cheri and Where is Kyra and look how they ended up. Mind you if Kyra had got some proper attention then who knows what could of happened. SPC don't seem to acquire films before they start filming though.

It was just bad timing with Cheri as one of the last titles of a studio going under. No release from the studio that year ended up triumphing. Everyone at Miramax was either just jumping ship or waiting for the end.
Kyra...well, wrong company. Plain and simple. I know I sound like a broken record, but IT SHOULDA BEEN IFC!!!!!!!

Maybe it’s the critic in me but I always thought the movie was haphazardly edited.

We never know how a film will turn out even when everything going in looks so promising. I liked some aspects of her performance in Cheri but I thought she was miscast. Michelle looked more like a well toned soccer mom than a 1920s French courtesan. I also thought Frears' direction was spotty and the story was pretty thin to begin with. Cheri had some great moments - especially, the verbal sparring between Michelle and Kathy Bates and Michelle's final scene - but those moments were few and far between. The character of Frances Price seems a better fit but the success of the film will depend on the direction, the script and the performances. There has to to be some magic for a story like this to work onscreen. But I'm stoked and I hope it becomes one of her signature performances. And this is exactly the kind of film I hoped she would find at this point in her career too. Fingers crossed!

Lol this is funny, but I hadn't actually read this Deadline article you linked to until now. I had read The WRAP and Variety and Hollywood Reporter, but this Deadline article is the ONLY one that includes this quote from Sony: Not that they would say anything else, but they must be really confident in it and that quote got me excited all over again. I hope they are right. I wonder why the other outlets didn't have that quote?

I thought Rupert and Pfeiffer were not very good, I'm not sure I'd say she was miscast, but something didn't work for me, until maybe the final few scenes and the script was not great and that narration bothers me to this day.

Also, it needs to be highlighted that SPC bought the rights not only for the U.S., but also the U.K., Germany, France, Italy, Japan, China and worldwide airlines.
I don't know how many other films they have bought that many territories, but it seems they usually don't? I think the only recent example of them snatching up multiple territories like this was Call Me By Your Name. Great sign, in my opinion. That's quite a commitment. It tells me they think this will be a hit and they can make money with it. Getting harder to contain my excitement.

And that was after Call Me By Your Name premiered at Sundance, no?? They’re buying this movie sight unseen which tells me a lot about how much confidence they’ve got in it!

Still let's not get our hopes up.

This is great news. Says a lot that they bought it before filming started IMO. Agree - this will be dropped in prime awards season but I'm thinking they'll wait for Venice. Just grateful this is a firm "go" now.

Just grateful this is a firm "go" now. even in my opinion, if the film is very beautiful, it will be presented at the venice film festival, which has become the best platform for the Oscar race in recent years (Gravity, la la land, the shape of water, birdman, black swan, Rome, Billboards Ebbing Missouri, the hurt locker all had a world premiere in Venice). although I would like pfeiffer to participate at least once in the cannes film festival where it has never been, contrary to venice where it has been 3 times. it is very important in my opinion that an actress participates in these art festivals to meet important directors and talented newcomers to be able to collaborate with them

I bet she would hate it, though, Lol. But part of me hopes it doesn't go to Cannes. Films that go there usually get released really soon after in summer and I want a fall release. But we're getting way ahead of ourselves.

At long last finished read this novel --- can't say I love it, characters not likeable except near the conclusion but just a tiny little bit, esp. Frances who Michelle will play. Not enough story for me -- lots of funny lines, kind of interesting but I am let down after reading it.
Struggling to think of how they will make a movie from this novel that people will not find cold or pointless --- Patrick (author) might have made some changes and added more meat -- I am hopeful he did
Lastly, Lucas Hedges is all kinds of wrong for the part of the son -- way young

I still have not gotten around to reading it, but after reading reviews, a lot of people had the same criticism you did. Maybe since they changed the age of the son, they did change other things as well? And since the author also wrote the script, maybe he went back and found things he wasn't happy with in his book or added things he might have left out of the book to the script?

I've not read the book and don't plan to but I've heard mixed reactions to the book. Seems like it is a love or hate book but I've mostly heard good things about it. I'm still super excited Michelle is doing this and Lucas is a great actor and I'm looking forward to seeing them on screen together. I'm sure there will be differences in the film from the novel.

It's not a likable character, no. But typical likability in a character isn't something that's necessary to have a good film. Elizabeth Taylor and Anthony Hopkins won Oscars for playing characters who don't meet traditional likability standards, but were dynamic and intriguing, which is the case with Frances Price. While she's not written as warm and cuddly, she's incredibly acerbic, witty, pensive, has great self-awareness and is a keen observer, taking in the world around her in a really unique way. Her reactions to situations make such a delicious character. One of my fave moments in the book comes when Frances is walking through a restaurant and some guy at a table with his friends stops her and criticizes her husband (or the way she handled her husband's death, I can't remember) right to her face. Her reaction is to remain silent, look at the man, before taking his drink from the table, downing it in one gulp, putting the glass back and then walking away. It's a small moment, but said so much about the character in terms of the way she absorbs and reacts to certain situations and I LOVED IT!!
She's not gonna resonate with general audiences, but then again this movie wasn't ever gonna be for them LOL, and I get the feeling that the likability of her characters is something that hasn't been one of Michelle's great concerns when it comes to choosing her roles. I mean, we're about to see her playing the villain in a Maleficent movie ha ha I think she cares if they're interesting, at least to her, not to mention challenging. Frances fits both criteria.
I do agree that Hedges is an odd choice to play Malcom. He seems too young and just altogether different than the way the character is written. But we'll see. I'm especially looking forward to the scene of him riding the bicycle as Frances sits by drinking a glass of wine. The psychology of them as a family is so present in that scene without them even saying much. I do wish they could get Frances Conroy as the American ex-pat and Alison Janney as Frances' best friend...they'd be dream casting for me!!

Honestly, this sort of sounds like Ingrid from White Oleander. Not likable until the end? Just going by comments and reviews, it sounds like there is not much backstory to the character, would those of you who have read the book agree with that? I hope there will be an arch in the film and good character development.

She's got more humanity than Ingrid, except perhaps when it comes to herself. There is a good-sized scene with her talking about some of her childhood experiences and how they shaped her into the woman/mother she is, which definitely helped in understanding her. I could see this being expanded in the film. There's so much of the book that is ripe for exploring further in the film, even though it is a fairly cinematic novel on its own IMO

Sony Pictures Classics founder Michael Barker:
He was not talking directly about French Exit, but rather their approach to buying films and projects at festivals, etc.
I'm feeling really good about French Exit. They are confident.
