I'm still not that excited for this, but it doesn't look bad at all. Nice to see Leslie Odom Jr. getting a somewhat big role.

It does look promising as a big studio picture, but it doesn't make me feel exciting either, I was more crazy about The Wizard of Lies and absolutely for Where is Kyra? May be this kind of big budget production just really not my thing.
And this teaser looks way too light in my opinions.

For me, this is one of those films she does where I'm going to love no matter what...I won't really be able to be objective bout it. It's the same as it was for Stardust and Dark Shadows (both properties with somewhat niche fanbases of which I was part of before she ever signed onto do them). Its the same with this. I love the 70s film and LOVE Christie so they could be sitting around playing cards th whole time and I'd still be excited for this movie. HA HA I'm hopeless, I know!!
Plus, I really love Branagh as a director, especially when he does a thriller. Dead Again, his early 90s film with Emma Thompson is still one of the best of the 90s neo-noir genre!! If anyone hasn't seen it, check it out! It'll give u some sense of how he handles a thriller

LOVE the poster.
The trailer is very good. I like the way the camera moves through the dining car as each suspect is identified, with most of them speaking directly to the camera for a moment. It feels like the camera is judging each one of them. The production looks very high end and I can't find anything to criticize really. My hope is Branagh will take it several cuts above the set bound 1974 film, but not tamper too much with the brilliance of the novel. In the right hands, this could be a triumph of style and storytelling.
It's also pure escapist fare, meant to entertain and hopefully dazzle audiences. I'm kinda glad Pfeiffer signed-on because her tastes don't usually run this way, aside from a few notable exceptions like What Lies Beneath and Batman Returns.

I'm also not a fan of the trailer. Having seen the original, I feel like the trailer should give more details. I'm not sure the trailer is intriguing enough for those who have no idea what the movie is about.

They call Johnny "oscar worthy" then later say the negative parts of the movie is Johnny because he is "dull". I am confused Are u sure?? I looked again and couldn't find the part bout Johnny being Oscar-worthy, only of him being dull. Either way, still excited LOL

I know it said "oscar worthy" somewhere in there haha. Maybe they said Kenneth was,not Johnny It would be swell if it were true for Kenneth, he's way overdue IMO

Just opened up my laptop n discovered that I hadn't closed that tab after I first read it, so I decided to copy n paste for those who hadn't read it!!
"So using a throwaway since they were very serious about us not writing about this film. So don't be shocked if I delete this if I get any kind of heat, but hey this film seems super fucking hyped so might as well fill you folks in because fuck it right? Well the good news is that this movie is goddamn phenomenal. I mean it, I was shocked at how good it was. Honestly while I was expecting a good time, I was thinking it would be more of a campy silly experience. Holy shit though, it blew me away. The film is actually a lot more melancholy than I thought. Branagh's performance as Poirot is incredible, Oscar worthy IMO. He plays the role with a lot of melancholy. There's still the classic Poirot fuddy duddy attitude but his obsession with order has really destroyed him over the years. He sees murder as a supreme break of the soul and is depressed that while he's a genius it's in service of misery. That said he's not super grim-dark, this isn't the DCEU of Poirot movies. He find joy in life too, it's just he has clearly been weighed on over the year. It's clear this is a very experienced Poirot which is a great move IMO. The rest of the cast are also great. Everyone gets their one big scene and a lot of the actors bring it. As expected Jacobi and Odom Jr. are great but the real surprise for me was Josh Gad who puts away all his ticks and just gives a great dramatic performance. However the real standout is Michelle Pfiefer. No joke don't be shocked if a lot of Oscar heat goes on her for Best Supporting. Just a fantastic performance. The visuals are fantastic. Branagh really uses the space well and loves the wide frame. The final parlor scene with the reveal of the killer(s) is incredible. One of the best in cinematic history. Also lots of very good long takes including a great one to introduce the train and everyone on it. Also the filming of the discovery of the body was very unique, shot like the ceiling down scene in Taxi Driver. Oh for those worried about the choice of music in the trailer: while the music was temp music it was all orchestral so no worries about Imagine Dragons showing up in the film itself. Okay okay so now you're probably like "okay studio stooge, jerk us off some more" so here's the bad. The action is horrible. Absolutely horrendous. Thankfully there's only two action scenes but one is very Sherlock Holmes (the RDJ movie) esque and it's awful. Didn't help that the CGI for it was unfinished but I just know it'll be in the full trailer and everyone will groan which is a shame. Also I found Depp pretty dull and Branagh definitely goes full cheese some times in the direction. However I think the film is truly great and could be a big box office and Oscar hit. Honestly now I'm really worried about how it tested. I have a feeling the studio was surprised at how popular the trailer was and are wondering if it should be a more fun film. In my row we all seemed pretty positive but I wasn't invited to the focus group, so no clue what they said. The path I see for them to possibly ruin it is to make it more like the RDJ Sherlock Holmes movies. More humor, more action. I really hope that's not the case because those were the weakest parts. I think since films like Gone Girl made money that studios are more willing to let smart mysteries remain intact because I think there's a hungry audience for it. If it gets ruined it will be a damn shame because in its current state it's my favorite movie of the year and will please a lot of people I'm sure. It's dour and doesn't leave you cheering but the tone is so perfect. Please major studio heads, don't fuck this up! Okay will answer questions till the studio police come and murder me! Enjoy."

This is consistent with my recollection of the original movie. Only Albert Finney and Lauren Bacall were deserving of any kind of awards attention. I think the only way this movie gets some real Oscar shot is if it makes a lot of money and Pfeiffer gets singled out in the reviews. Otherwise, it's hard for a remake to make any kind of traction at the Oscars.

This will probably only be in contention for Costumes, or if it gets good reviews maybe for Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. I would take anything on Reddit with a huge grain of salt. There are some real creeps on there. To your last point, when was the last time a remake did well with the Oscars? The Fugitive?? But that was a remake of a TV show. I can't really think of any right now.

I can't recall many remakes outside of biographies that were successful on an awards level even tho I know there were some that were. I keep on thinking bout Mildred Pierce but that was HBO

Oh right! True Grit did get a lot of Oscar nominations. Also, I think Murder on the Orient Express is not a very popular movie. It's somewhat of a forgotten film in the 70's. So there's really no high expectations to exceed the original.
Sofia Copolla's The Beguiled is also a remake of a somewhat unknown movie. It could also gain some traction for this year's Oscars.

www.dailymail.co.uk/home/you/article-4624774/The-new-stream-queen-Lucy-Boynton-Netflix-drama-Gypsy.htmlLucy concedes that the filming experience was intimidating. ‘I’d assumed that after shooting everyone would retreat to their own corners, but we all hung out in one room together, drinking tea. It was surreal – all these faces I had grown up admiring and having to hold up my end of it. Kenneth created this warm atmosphere, though, where we were all like a family.’ The one person she felt starstruck about was Michelle. ‘It took me three days before I could even speak to her. She exudes cool, but actually she is warm and funny.’ Sergei Polunin, the controversial Ukrainian ballet dancer who quit the Royal Ballet, also appears in the film. Lucy was ‘in awe’ of him. ‘He never overthinks a scene; he is just so present, moving through each second instinctively. You can feel the energy change around him. I plan to steal his work ethic with immediate effect.’

This had a screening in New York Tuesday. Not hearing great things about it. I also saw a tweet from a critic I follow and he didn't say the name of the movie, because it's embargoed, but just putting 2 and 2 together, sounds like he saw this and really didn't like it.

People can't really talk about it in detail because it's embargoed until a certain date and they'll get in trouble, but mostly it's messy, bad script, corny. Performances are okay, nothing special. Saw someone else on twitter say he heard the same thing from people at the screening.
