I have to admit I'm a little bit disappointed if she couldn't get a nomination, but I guess I have to move on...:-)

I have to admit I'm a little bit disappointed if she couldn't get a nomination, but I guess I have to move on...:-) Not over yet! anything could happen but if the part she has in the movie was bigger it woulda helped. I will not be that mad if if does not happen because her part was so small and the reviews for her were v. good but not her best ones so this will not be as bad as when Michelle missed for WhiteOleander

Yeah, I agree, this would not be as big of a snub as the one for Oleander. That still hurts, big time.

Now we might have to add Julia Roberts to the list for supporting actress competition. Yuck. She’s insufferable and I’ll never get her appeal. Her new film just did really well at the box office and got very good reviews.

I wouldn't call her competition this year I guess we will have to wait and see what it does at the box office in its second week, because if it pulls a Blind Side and makes even more money the second week, she's totally in the conversation. On another note, I'm a bit annoyed that Lawrence and Scott Feinberg didn't even mention Pfeiffer on his podcast that he just released. Lawrence is in full campaign mode and you'd think she'd try and campaign a little for her co-star, but whatever. Feinberg mentioned Aronofsky getting great performances out of his actresses and mentioned just about all of them, even Mila Freakin' Kunis but did not even talk about Pfeiffer at all.

I think that Feinberg never has praised, even a litlle, Michelle Pffeifer. In her advance of Emmy nominations she talk about the nominated stars (Kidman, Dern, King, etc.) but he didn't talk about Michelle and he put as a favorites Regina King and Laura Dern. Could be that some critics are not Pffeifer supporters?

And he updated his predictions today. He has mother! as a major threat for Best Picture, Lol. Aronofsky as a possibility for Best Director, Lawrence as a possibility for Best Actress, but still no Pfeiffer in Supporting Actress. www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists/2018-oscar-predictions-1056280/item/best-original-song-1056277

There's always the wild card factor...some actors have gotten nominations out of nowhere. I know it's a longshot, but history is full of actors getting nominated for not having to do any campaigning n little to know winning of other awards leading up to the Oscars. This is true in both past and present cases. Jane Fonda had no other awards/nominations for her performance in the 80s for The Morning After , like none, zero; n she was still nominated for Best Actress that year. In 2009 Penelope Cruz got no real recognition from critics groups, apart from Globe and SAG nominations for her role in Nine. This was mainly cuz the majority of ppl hated the movie...yet she was still nominated for Best Supporting Actress that year...so the wild card is a staple that still exists. Like I said tho, longshot.

Yeah, I truly think the wind has gone out of the sail for both mother! and Murder on the Orient Express. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd rather she didn't even have a nomination attached to mother!. It's better for her to move on from it completely now.
Hopefully THAT role will come and we have the roundtable to look forward to.

If she were nominated, it would be like the Emmys all over again, with stronger supported performances being touted over hers n her going through the motions of showing up and having to watch someone else win...that's no fun for her or for us...
THAT role that u r talking bout will be unstoppable and not so easily forgotten when it comes

I think it's good enough to be, she got better reviews for 'mother!' than she did for WoL, I believe. People all over Twitter and critics loved her performance. I don't think she'd get too much backlash, if any at all. It would be a really cool nomination. Did you all see the LA Times video snippet from the roundtable? I honestly can't figure out if Kidman is looking at Pfeiffer with contempt, confusion or admiration, Lol. It's kind of funny.

Her work this year has been impeccable. She was outstanding in both roles so a nomination should be guaranteed, but the stupid Academy is all about politics and campaigns. I´m going to get really mad if she does not get a nom.

So, Fox IS campaigning at least for Best Song, but Pfeiffer wouldn't be credited with a nomination since she didn't write it. I wonder if they are also campaigning for other categories like Supporting Actress? Pfeiffer is really the only one with a shot at any awards.

This is not their final list of nominees, but we have our first critics "long list" of potential nominees for their awards, this is the Indiana Film Journalists Association, and Pfeiffer made the "long list" for Supporting Actress for 'mother!' This is similar to what BAFTA used to do, they release the "long list" of films and performances they are considering nominating. I'm just happy her performance is being remembered somewhere, even if it's a small random group like Indiana. indianafilmjournalists.com/BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Mary J. Blige, “Mudbound” Jennifer Connelly, “Only the Brave” Ana de Armas, “Blade Runner 2049” Jennifer Ehle, “A Quiet Passion” Claire Foy, “Breathe” Rebecca Hall, “The Dinner” Bella Heathcote, “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” Sylvia Hoeks, “Blade Runner 2049” Holly Hunter, "The Big Sick" Allison Janney, “I, Tonya” Melissa Leo, “Novitiate” Elizabeth Marvel, “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)” Laurie Metcalf, “Lady Bird” Sienna Miller, “The Lost City of Z” Michelle Pfeiffer, “mother!” Odeya Rush, “The Bachelors”

It’s a flop: Does that mean an Oscar slight? Oscar Isaac stops the show in “Suburbicon” when he appears as a slick insurance-claims investigator checking on a fishy murder claim. Although his performance is subtle and hilarious, it is unlikely to show up on many prediction lists. The reason: The movie was creamed by critics and tanked at the box office. The same is true for Michelle Pfeiffer, who is hypnotic as a house guest from hell in the recent flop “Mother!” She startles with her bitchy comments and disruptive movements around the home of a cult poet idolized by her husband. Like Isaac, she wills the movie alive. Surely these two deserve some respect at Oscar time.

Spoke to a colleague of mine last night at the screening for The Post. He works w me on the site n we r both members of Austin Film Critics Association but he's also a member of the Online Film Critics Association...he says that Paramount PR team has ben hounding them to make sure they ALL see Downsizing. He reckons that is gonna be their film this year.
I'm seeing it tonight...can't wait to see if it really is a dog or has actual awards chances.
I don't think he's necessarily right. I can see why the studio wants everyone to see it. Every voting critic, at least the majority of them, has had the chance to see mother! since its been out for months now. Downsizing is coming out so close to critics awards being given out, I can see them wanting it to have the same kind of exposure as mother! to cover all their bases.

I honestly have no idea how ANYONE is voting this year or even who has seen what...for example, i haven't seen lady bird but my coworker loved it. The response to mother! was split down the middle here...its all just up in the air...

Ha ha no...we've got one annual meeting. We submit our initial votes in late December n then our final ones in early January. Votes are submitted electronically. There's no campaigning amongst us lol
Saw Downsizing tonight. What. A. Dog. First half of the movie was unspectacular given how creative the concept was, but still showed promise. Unfortunately it goes off the rails in the second half, trying to be environmentally conscious and poetic and depressing and funny all at the same time. It just gets awkward and bad the deeper it goes and the more it tries. I CANNOT believe the studio is hedging their bets on this turd of a film.

It’s surprising that Paramount is campaigning so hard for it and shocking to learn that Alexander Payne has failed after directing the likes of Nebraska and The Descendants. Nebraska was one of my personal favorites in recent years. Now Paramount is pissing me off even more by pushing J-Law with no apparent interest in doing the same for Pfeiffer. Interesting how the recent J-Law / Aronofsky split is being leveraged to promote her chances in the Oscar derby. In addition to the Hollywood Reporter round table, she’s done a Variety Studio: Actors On Actors w/ Adam Sandler where she talks about how the reviews affected their relationship. Pretty desperate if you ask me. I don’t think she has a chance in hell of being nominated and I say this without any disrespect for her as an actress. I think she’s brilliant. Right now, it seems like Janney, Metcalfe, Blige are the Supporting Actress front runners with Blige fiercely campaigning her way to a nomination. Unless Paramount or Pfeiffer’s management team step up, I suspect her excellent performance in mother! will be overlooked.
