I've managed to evade spoilers so far, but I did see one thing that doesn't thrill me. Apparently: Pfeiffer disappears completely from the third act {SPOILER! CLICK ME IF YOU DARE!}Yep. Disappointing, but the people I've spoken to who have seen it all say she is really great.

Apparently: Pfeiffer disappears completely from the third act That does not really matter if she gives a great performance. That is usually what happens to supporting characters, which is obviously the case. As long as her performance is remarkable, she can get a nod. Screentime does not matter. Ask Hopkins, Hathaway (yuck!), Viola Davis or Judi Dench.

It really depends on the strength of the overall film, too, if the film as a whole gets rave reviews vs. middling to mixed reviews and honestly, {SPOILER! CLICK ME IF YOU DARE!} it sounds like 'mother!' will get very mixed reviews, in my opinion. It sounds VERY divisive. And of course, it helps if you're a bigger name actor, as your examples point to.

I just have a horrible feeling that being a Pfeiffer fan we'll be left disappointed when reviews come out but I really, really hope I'm wrong.

I tried not to let that Vanity Fair article get my hopes up too much, Lol. This film will have some passionate supporters, but also a lot of loud detractors that probably won't get the metaphors or won't care what the message is and will just want to scream anyway.

I'm expecting mixed reviews and middling box office for this anyway.

This film was either a bold or a reckless, self-indulgent move by Araonofsky. We don't know yet. If he pulled it off - even with mixed or sharply divided critical reaction - I think Michelle could get a Best Supporting nomination if her performance is as strong as the early buzz suggests. I just don't know how much of that buzz is genuine vs. a publicist's wishful thinking. I have avoided all spoilers up to now and may not read reviews from Venice or Toronto until after I've seen the film.

Apparently the Venice dress code is dress for a funeral. I'm considering taking the day off on Tuesday so can catch up with all the reviews and reactions and hopefully see Michelle in attendance too.

Dress for a funeral? This actually might increase the odds that she wears Armani (classic black) I'm debating if I should stay up past 1 AM just for reactions. With my luck, I'll stay up and there won't be any, LOL.

Thank you! So, 13 hours until the press conference? Six hours until the first press screening. 8 hours or so until reactions. I'm not going to get any sleep, Lol.

Wow. Reactions even more divisive than I imagined. Lol š I'm still glad she did this film, though.

Yeah, seeing alot of tweets saying to take the movie and Michelle off any kind of Oscar prediction discussions. We all had a hunch this would be too divisive and daring for the academy, but I'm still glad she made the movie. Hopefully I'll like it. ------------------------- The Hollywood Reporter

Only came across four reviews so far, but a few things seem certain:
It will get mixed to favorable reviews but not everyone will buy into what Araonofsky is serving up.
Not an Oscar friendly movie but an impressive genre film with strong performances and dazzling execution.
Michelle has a showy role and she runs with it. The film however doesn't seem to be on the level of a Black Swan, so the likelihood of her getting a Best Supporting nom is a stretch. I think the early hype was maybe more click bait than anything else. Still, based purely on the few available reviews so far, I am glad she signed on. I wanted edgy from her and this definitely sounds edgy.
Can't wait to see it.

Couldn't agree with you more, MichaelH. I'm so happy she did something that sounds edgy. And after watching the press conference I'm even more excited about seeing the film.
