Boxoffice projections aside, isn't the real key to mother's success going to be the critical reception?
It's being marketed in the vein of Black Swan and Requiem For A Dream, which raises the bar quite high. And then there are the Rosemary's Baby comparisons the studio is actively promoting. If it lives up to expectations and delivers on what Araonofsky has promised, it should generate enough buzz among serious filmgoers to turn a profit. I agree w/ Babyface that J Law's devout following will be a factor, but I don't see this as a slam dunk at the boxoffice without strong word of mouth and favorable reviews.
In terms of the numbers, Mother! doesn't come with the Stephen King brand, the blockbuster potential - or the upfront costs - that IT has. So I don't expect mother! to out perform IT at the boxoffice. Yet if mother! delivers the goods as an innovative genre film, it should do well enough.

Well I saw something Gregory Ellwood said about Pfeiffer and 'mother!' this morning. All I will say is, we'll know in a few days if she's going to be an awards contender going forward or not. I've been skeptical about her chances for a film like this, but it's not out of the question either. I also don't really think he knows that much, even though he indicates he has some inside information.

Vanity Fair:
"With Pfeiffer literally stalking her psychological prey, the clip features the kind of tense monologue that could be used to tease Pfeiffer as an awards contender come Oscar season. Someone who has seen the film tells us that both Lawrence and Pfeiffer’s performances are “incredibly intense,” but suggests that Pfeiffer’s tour de force is particularly worthy of supporting-actress consideration and could even finally clinch an Oscar win for the three-time nominee."

Vanity Fair be like: "Fuck you, Gregory Ellwood!"

I'd love to see Michelle in Armani again at Venice but some reason she doesn't wear him anymore. These days it seems to be Dior or Alexander McQueen. I did love her McQueen outfit for The Family premiere at Berlin.

I liked her pant suit for The Wizard of Lies. I know f*ck all bout designers, but it's a look that really worked for her!

This must be a private screening for industry people? I hope he tweets about the performances/Pfeiffer when it's over.

Saw this comment on Twitter from someone who was at the screening last night. {SPOILER! CLICK ME IF YOU DARE!} "early word for #MotherMovie is that JLaw is a tour de force, extravagant & absolutely gives her all, & Pfieffer is slithery & scene-stealing"

There is a screening/premiere in LA tonight and Michelle and the cast are to supposedly going to be in attendance.

Wonder if they could be doing the press junket this weekend if all the cast are in LA before flying to Venice next week?

No spoilers here in this tweet
I think Bourdain is friends with Aronofsky, so I wouldn't trust anything he says, honestly. Hopefully we get some word from the screening tonight, but they probably had to sign a non-disclosure form and can't say much.

No Twitter reactions, but.... {SPOILER! CLICK ME IF YOU DARE!}on another forum a few people who saw it chimed in as much as they could (they had to sign nondisclosure forms, so they can't say much). One said Pfeiffer gives her best performance in this film. Another said Pfeiffer should be in the race for Best Supporting Actress. Another said "no way" the Oscars touch this film, too crazy and wild. Another said "IT'S INTENSE, physically exhausting at times" and "did not expect any of that" in terms of what happens in the film.
So as expected, this sounds like it will be VERY divisive. I'll wait for proper reviews in a couple of days to see about awards chances for the performances.

Some JLAW fans are putting spoliers about the movie on Twitter and i'm pissed that I saw it. Dunno if its real or not but wowwwww. But if u guys have Twitter be careful if you wanna avoid knowing things about it Oh that's pretty crappy of them to do...I typically do a Twitter search on Michelle a couple of times a day to see what random stuff will come up...think I'll run into any spoilers by doing that??

That sucks, but I wonder why Paramount is even doing a screening just days before Venice anyway? They had to know not everyone would abide by the NDA they signed, someone always spills the beans. I was told some spoilers, but I would never put them on social media like that.

I've managed to evade spoilers so far, but I did see one thing that doesn't thrill me. Apparently: Pfeiffer disappears completely from the third act
